Page 8 { Meditorial By Rev. Jim Paul aaa Canada has become a laughing stock in the Western World. It's become increasingly hard, even for many Canadians, to watch the even- ing news without a sick feeling of shame descending upon them. The: severe infighting that has arisen between the provinces and Ottawa over the constitutional debate and the newly proposed Liberal budget is in- tolerable. How can there exist such a rabbid spirit of confrontation and retaliation between Ottawa and Alberta? How can there be so much division and pessimism in a country so richly blessed? We are giving the outside world the clear message that we're a greedy, brawling and angry people. ; Jesus'. words in Matthew 12:25 come as a grim warning "Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand". The Prince of Peace is ' touching in this verse two basic things. First, Jesus warns us that "'division brings ruin". If we think that Canada as a country will go unharmedin spite of these massive wounds of internal war, we are sadd- ly mistaken. Our economy needs a baptism of love and understanding, which can only come when we turn to God and seek His face. Not only did Jesus warn that "division within a country brings ruin," but He also warns us that "'division can even ruin one's own home". If the members of one's home are divided against eachother, how long can it exist? Where bitterness, lack of love and anger are allowed to infect a mar- riage, the disease of seperation and divorce soon destroys the home. In Revelations 3:20, Jesus gives us an answer for the problem we're facing in our homes and country. "Behold, I stand. at the door and knock, if any man hears voice and opens the door, I will come into him and sup! with him and he with Me". Passion Play -- and other wonders by Rev. Robert J. McNaught Forty-one persons accompanied Rev. and Mrs. _ Robert J. McNaught of Scarborough on a 24-day tour of Europe during the month of September. Mr. McNaught is the eldest son of Rev. Dr. and Mrs. Thomas McNaught who resided in Russell 1933-1958. Mrs. McNaught is the former Beulah Shelp who was married to James McNaught until his death in 1974 and then in 1978 became married to R.J. Among those who shared the holiday with them were Iva Shelp another Russell girl and Margery Meikle (the former Margery Brown) who attended the Russell continuation School years ago. The group left Toronto on September Ist and flew to Amsterdam. Then|travelling bybus they went to Cologne, Rothenburg (an old medieval walled ci- ty), Ettal and Munich. They spent two days in Oberammergau -- a small town in the Bavarian Alps -- where they attended the Passion Play. This play has been presented every ten years for the past 350 years by the folks of this community_as an act of gratitude for God's protection during the years of The Plague which swept through Europe in the mid-1600's. From Oberammergau the group journeyed to Strassburg -- the home of Mozart and to Vienna where they attended a Strauss concert. Across the Alps the tour took them to Venice, Florence and Rome. Along the way visits to interesting and historic churches, castles and places added to the enjoyment of the tour. A gondola ride in Venice proved another highlight in a trip so full of rich moments. The glass-blowing demonstration (with opportunity to purchase these products) in. Venice and the leather display (again with opportunity to purchase) in Florence helped to keep the group abreast of the times. Rome with its religious (pagan as well as Christian) architecture, sculpture and art) proved awesome to most of the group. Viewing the Tower of Pisa which has quite a list to it) amazed everyone that it was even standing. Across the Alps the tour reached Lucerne with its yodelling, Swiss Horns and Mount Pilatus. The visit to Paris was an experience not soon to be forgotten with its grand castles, art galleries, concert halls and the Champs Elysees the Arc de Triumphe and the Eiffel Tower. Of course no tour to Paris would be complete without a visit to the Moulin Rouge and the group included that as well: Before leaving France the tour stopped at the Vimy Memorial so precious to Canadians and an im- pressive reminder of the great price Canada paid in terms of its young men during World War I. It was a deeply moving time to visit this place. The group returned to Toronto on the 24th, but Mr. and Mrs. McNaught accompanied Herbert and Lola McNaught for a few days' visit to Scotland -- the childhood home of Mr. McNaught's father. While in Scotland, Mr. McNaught preached in Auchencairn and Dundrennan (near Castle Douglas). A visit to Edinburgh, Lanark and Ayr completed the tour for the McNaughts.
