Warriors set for new season The Russell Warriors are look- ing forward to a most successful season in the Cambridge-Russell Intermediate "B" Hockey League. One major change has taken place in that home games will take place every Friday night at 8 p.m. instead of Sunday after- noons as was the case last year. Other teams in the league are Limoges, St. Albert, Casselman, Embrun, and last year's champs Carlsbad. The National Hockey League is giving us some indications the quality of hockey will improve and the competition getting a little better which is a good omen. Here are my predictions for the final overall standings for the 1980-81 season: Buffalo Sabres are my choice to lead the NHL standings. The outstanding goaltending duo of Danny Edwards and Bob Sauve should have no difficulty repeating their performance of last season when they won the Vezina trophy. With more con- sistency from their forwards, the Sabres should win their first Stanley Cup. New York Islanders finally disposed the choker label last spring when they won the championship. They are a young, disciplined hockey club and the credit should go to coach Al Arbour. With the scoring power of Mike Bossy and Brian Trottier and the leadership of super defenceman Denis Potvin, the Islanders should make it a race for the NHL overall points lead and the Stanley Cup. Montreal Canadiens aren't the team they used to be and won't win the Stanley Cup. Goaltending isn't as strong as a few years ago; Guy Lafleur and Larry Robinson aren't as ef- fective anymore. The competition is getting tougher and teams aren't afraid of the once-mighty Habs. If they are beaten too often, it could spell the end of Claude Ruel's coaching career. Montreal will be lucky to finish third overall. Philadelphia Flyers would have won the championship last season if they had stayed away from needless penalties. Their power play will have to improve considerably; it was the worst in the NHL last season. Goaltending isn't the best. I don't think Pete Peeters and Phil Myre can do the job. More changes are imperative if the Flyers are to win their third. Stanley Cup in their 13 year history. Minnesota North Stars should be as strong as last season when they played in the semi-finals. Former Ottawa 67's Bob- by Smith, Tim Young and Steve Payne constitute one of the best forward lines in the NHL. Goaltending seems to be as steady as last season. Minnesota fans will be looking to their stars for a momentous effort and conceivably their first cham pionship. oe Toronto Maple Leafs are a much-improved team and there is no reason they can't finish sixth in the overall standings. Even without goaltender Mike Palmateer, the Leafs have good netminding. Jiri Chra is a capable replacement. Defenceman Borje Salming is the best they have and a téam leader. Con- troversial Leaf owner Harrold Ballard has finally settled his differences with center Darryl Sittler which means some tran- quility in the Leaf ranks. Toronto fans deserve a winner and this might be the year! Boston Bruins haven't look respectable in the early season causing a decline in attendance at Boston Gardens. In fact, they have been going downhill for a few seasons. I don't think Gerry Cheevers is a coach or will ever be one. The Bruins seem to lack motivation and consistency. Boston fans are used to winners and it's not going to be a banner year for them or the' players.
