Page 8 Meditorial By Rev. Jim Paul In a recent edition of the Christian Science Monitor there was an in- terview with the real-life Fonzie, actor Henry Winkler. Judging by the 55,000 fan letters he receives each month from young people across North America, one could say he's.a bonafide teenage hero. Scores of acne-faced young men dream of being like the "Fonz" walking down the street with a girl clinging on each arm. Other teens glorify their hero by speaking English with a "Fonzie" dialect. It's not uncommon to hear young people express their feelings of joy with "eh, eh, eh", as they wiggle their thumbs around in the air, or express their feelings of approval with "cool, cool", as they shake their hands from side to side. Teenagers who have adopted the mannerisms of this TV hero should also accept his counsel for their lives. When asked what he thought of today's teen, Winkler said: It hurts me that many young people, for some reason, at this mo- ment in history, have no sense of future. They can't see past their nose... It's irresponsible to be self-destructive, and you can never meet your dream if you are a slave to an outside substance such as drugs or alcohol. Es It is a rare treat for a teacher to spend a weekend with a former student. On the long Victoria Day weekend, my former student, Helen Hum- phries, rode her motorcycle from Toronto to Russell to take a closer look at the coun- try and at her countrified, . former Grade-Three teacher. Last October, Helen and I were "'reunited" at the 25th Anniversary party of the G.P. Mackie School where I taught Grade Three for three years. It was an incredible experience meeting with former staff and students after an eleven year absence. Children grow up but faces never change. Although \most of my 'kids' were now Suzanne Schroeter's e Scrapbook, School daze nineteen year old university students, they were easily recognizable in the crowded gymnasium. During that weekend I found out that eight year olds remember everything. Even though Helen wasn't in my first class, she had heard how I had talked myself hoarse by the second week of school and my mother had to call in sick for me! She remembered every class trip, our pet hamster, Velvet, and all the teasing Mrs. Belbin and I dished out in fun. Heien and I talked about writing. She was intent upon becoming a writer and was really pleased because she had just won_a high school writing contest. Her prize-winning poem has since been published in Quarry magazine. Since that time Helen and I have corresponded. In one of. my letters I indicated to Helen that she could stay in Russell if she ever wanted to check out Ottawa's universities. I guess she couldn't contain her curiosity any longer and besides, she wanted to take a maiden voyage on her new Honda motorcycle. When all the reminiscing was over, we showed Helen the country joys of watching one- day-old baby kildeers, patting calves at the Experimental Farm and the beauty of the Gatineau Park despite rain and fog. Helen hit the road early Tuesday morning and our fun was over. I was sad to see her leave on the long trip home, but I'm sure all the while she . was composing her next short story.
