Page 16 Village Legacy Doc Kinnaird finds new man Dr. Kinnaird Doctor Frank A. Kinnaird, Russell Village's family physician for more than 40 years, will turn over his practice to a local boy next summer. In announcing his retirement as Russell's second doctor in 90 years, he said his practice will be carried on by Doctor Gerry A. Heymans, 26, son of Harry and Mary Heymans, of R.R. 3 Russell. Born in Almonte, Gerry moved with the family to Russell in 1963. He attended Russell Public School, graduated with honors from North Dundas District High School and earned his degree of Doctor of Medicine from Toronto University in 1977. Since then, he has completed 18 months of additional training in a family and community residency program at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto and is now interning at the General and Riverside Hospitals in Ottawa. Doctor Heymans was married June 23 to Pamela Thomas, of Ot- tawa. He is one of five children, brothers Andre, 25, John, 23, also married and living in Winchester, Nick, 22, and sister Cathy, 18. Mary Heymans said her eldest son always wanted to be in coun- try medicine, at first as a veterinarian and later as a family practitioner. "'Oh boy, he was a real boy, a real farm boy. He was good at everything, always at the top of his class," she said, citing the 11 e trophies he won as a member of the Russell 4-H calf club. "I'm sure he will make a very good doc- tor." As a student, Doctor Heymans worked as a farm hand and as a volunteer at Winchester Memorial Hospital. His announcement as the village's third doctor in a cen- tury is in keeping with rural tradi- tion. Doctor Kinnaird, 72, unwill- ing to leave the village without its own physician, had pledged to continue his practice until a suc- cessor was found. The search of several years ended when Doctor Heymans approached him a year ago. Starting next summer, medicine will be dispensed from a clinic in the new house which Doctor Heymans plans to have built on the north side of Castor Street near the intersection of Mill Street. Doctor Kinnaird, whose devotion to family medicine was marked at a village tribute last year and earned him a federal lifestyles award in January, will renovate the old office as part of his home's living quarters. He said he had no immediate plans for retirement other than to remain active in village life.
