Up For Winter The Russell Township roads department is gearing for winter's onslaught with the recent rental of two new graders and negotiations now underway for the purchaase of a new tandem truck. The two graders were rented from Dominion Road Machines, of Carleton Place, for two years at a cost of $1,700 per machine per month. That's a considerable jump from the rental agreement just end- ed which called for $1,236 per machine per month over three years but, said Roads Superintendent Lucien Millaire, the increase was unavoidable. "The cost of machinery is going up all the time. We could have kept the old machines at an increased rent but the cost of replacing tires and making repairs made it more economical to go for the new ones}" he said. He said the township avoids tying up captial by renting rather than buying the big machines which retail for about $100,000 each. "Including maintenance, the cost works out to about the same and this way we always have good, new equipment on hand,"' he said. The department is also looking to replace a single-axle dump truck with $40,000 tandem "that would give us better plowing ability in the winter and better carrying ability in the summer" The township's three big trucks would then all be double-axled. "'With the graders and three tandems we'll be in good shape to keep _the roads clear this winter," Mr. Millaire said. Sharp, Irene Paul of Russell received col- ourful rooster fridge memo holders, donated by the talented Carmen James, Those attending on behalf of the Ontario Heart Foundation were: Joyce Burke, Ottawa, Betty Allen and Mrs. Ray Langstaff, Dundas Chapter OAL: Mrs. McCallum invited Miss Clara Stel to participate in the draw. Miss Stel is a faithful hospital visitor whose courage inspires all who know her. Moyra Knight Keys active committee member, was not able to be present. Mrs. A.E. Hamilton, of North Russell, added to the event by presenting a knee rug which she had knitted. Mrs. Hamilton is an active and pro- ductive 89 years young! . The happy occasion ende with a tea. The steaming beverages and tasty small cakes were prepared and served by the talented kitchen staff.
