This month marks the sixth an- niversary of our move to Russell. Although we'll always be '"'newcomers", we have been here long enough to witness many changes in and around the village. A few stand out in my mind as I think back to those first years of rural living. In 1973, long-standing Russell residents were slowly growing ac- customed to the new subdivisions in Castor Park, and-a few years later, Solidex. After decades of watching its young move to the ci- ty, the village experienced new growth as the trend reversed. Our home backed onto George Hay's pasture. Consequently the first faces to greet us after our move to the country were George's beef cattle, who loved to nibble on our compost heap, and watched us through the fence as we sat down to picnic suppers. (Incidentally, they didn't wear cowbells around their necks). Just days after we moved in, George's large barn on Castor Street burn- ed to the ground, and today the cows have been replaced by spanking new bungalows; the cow pasture has become a subdivision. During those first years, we were reminded every weekend of our precious country surroun- 'iene by the sight of John Dunlop Pigs'n Poodles By Dr. Geoff Cochrane Animal Parasites Hookworms are the most serious parasites found in dogs. They are extremely common in Canada and the U.S.A. Infection with this worm may occur in a number of ways. The immature form (larvae) may penetrate through the skin, especially bet- ween the foot-pads. It may be in- gested particularly when dogs eat grass, soil or when they lick their feet. Puppies may become in- fected during nursing. As dogs become older, resistance to hookworms infection develops. Signs of sickness include weakness and anemia as the worms primarily suck blood from the animal. Treatment should begin as soon as possible as this worm is highly pathogenic for dogs. Hookworms are capable of penetrating the skin of man caus- ing a dermetitis condition known as cutaneous larval migrams, (creeping eruption). Cochrane's Dairy Ltd. His barn was a treat to visit and his stories a delight. I was also around when Morgan Warner was still working regular shifts at the counter of his store on Mill Street, packing groceries and chatting with customers despite the fact that he was well into his eighties. Across the street, Berry's Feed and Seed Store took the prize for the most hasty departure from the Russell scene. Within hours a transport packed up the merchan- dise and the building stood sud- denly empty. But not for long -- the Feed Store Pizzeria and Pool Hall soon added a new dimension to the after school hours. Further changes in the village are almost too numerous to list. Concession Street continues to undergo an impressive facelift to meet the needs of this growing community. Therkelsen's move and the subsequent building of the new bank, the addition to the Registry Office, the renovations to the Commercial Hotel, Post Office and Shahan's Store have improved the appearance of main street by leaps and bounds. This summer the new Kool Korner became the Mecca of the Township and around the corner, the newer hamburger stand pro- mises to have the best view in town. Of course none of us will quick- ly forget the dust, detours and demolition caused by last sum- mer's sewer construction. With the hook-up deadline upon us, backhoes are again ripping up lawns and driveways. I await the day when they will leave us in peace. Yes, the village has grown and changed in a hundred different ways, but one thing has remained constant throughout the upheaval. Russell remains a safe and friendly community, a place where the small town qualities of care, interest and understanding can be found on every street cor- ner. S METCALFE PHARMACY LTD.
