Page4 Friday, February 9, 1979 CASTOR REVIEW Oports Every now and then you come face to face with disgraceful display of unathletics but you're so taken by the entertainment value that you just have to talk about it. A while back in Toronto they held the '"'So You Think You're Tough" boxing tournament. It was a gross display of inability but a welcome respite from the usual Saturday afternoon fights on CBS. Those bouts are for real, and they're in it for the bucks. The boys gathered in Toronto were there to find out who was the most formidable "amateur"' fighter. It was a combination of guts, very little talent and loads of fun for the spectators. One of the most entertaining the fighters have been around: matches of the tournament featured mountain-man Danny Sullivan, Sullivan is so big he made his 210lb. opponent look like a dwarf. Putting the Good-Year blimp to shame, Sullivan is a mean 6"' 5'-320 lb. gargantuan. Ha! If you saw his first fight you had to laugh. Sullivan was fighting a feisty little cracker who made such fast work of him that Mrs. Sullivan (Danny's mother) was probably - still summoning neighbours to watch Danny's contest when she no- ticed him realing about in his corner. Danny's opponent slapped him silly in a matter of seconds. A real Davy and Goliath story., All in all it was a good tourney Peter Van Dusen So you think you're tough eh? and gave the average joe a chance to try his skills in the ring, even if most of the competitiors came away feeling a little sore and a lot defeated. Another series We're going to play the Russians again. Why not? We get more entertainment out of watching the Soviets play over here than we do out of watching our own N.H.L. teams in action. Wonder why? The answer is simple. They're them and we're us that's why. Sure, you'll hear everyone say that Canadians don't have any sense of national- ism. That may be true but we have a certain critical unity problems in this country that make it hard to pull together. But when the Soviets set foot on Canadian soil, there are people in Toronto cheering for Les Canadiens and people in Mon- treal cheering for the Leafs. We couldn't ask for a better remedy for the unity crisis. Now if we could just get the fisherman in Nova Scotia to support the Edmonton Oilers. But anyway, it's going to be some kind of series. Putting Russell on the Map Russell ought to have a pro basketball team. That would certainly put Russell on the map as far as pro sports is concerned. We could have the likes of Karim Abdul Jabar strutting down the main street signing autographs for city-slickers and carrying a Russell Skyscrapers flag or poster. Sure Toronto has the Leafs and the Jays and maybe even the Argos. But Russell needs a team to complement the Warriors and the fastball teams. No other community around has a basketball team of National Basketball Association calibre so why not Russell? Maybe some day. As you know I'm _ just kidding right now, but save this column for 100 years. Who knows. ' "B" Champs Fitness Trail for Russell A proposal for a fitness trail on land along the south bank of the Castor River opposite Russell Village has been approved by Russell Township council. The proposal was submitted to council by Dan Thompson, man- ager of the Russell arena, at the request of village resident Greg Rokosh. The Township owns the land in question. Mr. Rokosh said the fitness trail would be located just west of the Russell Dam. It would be roughly circular and extend for about one kilometre, he said. The track's main feature would be a series of work stations to be used by hikers and joggers. The track would be made of an all-weather base, possibly wood chips, and could be used in winter by cross-country skiers. The work stations would also be made of natural products, such as logs. 'The idea is not to disturb the environment. The trail would be wide enough so people could walk or jog without bumping into each other,'"' Mr. Rokosh said. He added that "the project relied on community financial support for success". He said "Wintario and The Young Canada Works Fro- gram of Canada Manpower were also being looked to for support". It is hoped that the trail can be constructed this summer. Sure Second With one game remaining in their schedule, the Russell Rai- ders are guaranteed of second place. In a home and home series last weekend, the Raiders and the Osgoode Braves lost its eighth game of the campaign by a 5-3 count. Randy Blondin registered the hat trick while Keith McRoberts added a single as Russell fought to a draw on Friday night. Blondin scored one on Sunday bringing him up to 33 goals. McRoberts got his 15th and Dave Lee scored his 3rd of the season to round out the scoring in Sunday's loss to Osgoode. Osgoode will finish in first place with Russell in second position. Third and fourth place positions haven't been deter- mined with Glencairn and Rich- mond tying for third. Stittsville will finish in fifth and Kars in the basement of the SCIHL.
