CASTOR REVIEW a \ At least I know how to get rid of a persistent nasty smell; I can calculate how many BTU's I'd need to air condition my home and I can change a lightbulb. The source of these enlighten- ing skills is a recent Penguin paperback by Shirley Conran entitled Superwoman or Every- thing you Need to Know about Running a Home in Canada Today. Ms. Conran, a former Wom- en's Editor on leading British newspapers aims to win us all in- to more efficient, organized homemakers so we'll have more simplicity, pro-economy, pro- life, She considers herself pro- simplicity, pro-economy, pro- conservation, pro-reality and very pro-fun. And I might add somewhat anti-liberation as well. It is unfortunate that the author or publisher decided upon such a gimmicky title for the book. In doing so, they have alienated a valuable market for their book -- namely males! Men and women alike could equally benefit from many of the time-saving, problem-solving hints contained in this handy consumer guide. For instance, in the chapter entitled "Cleaner Faster'? we are instructed in methods to help save time and money, ie: DON'T keep pets, DON'T dry dishes, DON'T shop with a friend or get the groceries when you're hun- gry. Clues are also given on ways to cut down on housework. Helpful descriptions and uses of lew cleaners are listed Bix Suzanne Schroeter (e Scrapbook, \/ "Just Call Me Superwoman" ~ and we are even supplied with recipes for making our own cleaners and polishers. Subsequent chapters deal with such budget-boosters as '"'How To Buy The Best And The Cheapest", "How To Be A Famous Decorator", and "How To Move."' Far form turning the reader into a SUPERWOMAN, this book will enlighten young and old, male and female alike. In particular it may be most useful to young marrieds or singles setting up their first apartment. Almost anyone can benefit from reading the sections how to handle gas and electricity and Money, Money, Money (What to do if you are a cashaholic!). Superwoman is a_ valuable addition to the home library. It belongs right up there with the Family Medical Dictionary, The Dynamics of Bureaucracy and Monty Python's Flying Circus -- even if you have to put a plain brown wrapper over the cover. My copy of Superwoman is minus page 268. I'm carrying that page around with me at all times now. In 10 easy steps it outlines How To Deliver A Baby. The Russell Village Women's Institute have decided to make a donation to the Children's wing of the Winchester Hospital in recognition of International Year Of The Child. In addition, throughout 1979 guest speakers will focus on various aspects of the child in our society. Mad Monk No, Russell Red and White owner George Tyo hasn't given up storekeeping to join the clergy and no, he wasn't conducting a sceance with Hope Enery. Mr. Tyo donned the monastic robe to help out at the wine cellar, part of the Russell Winter Carnival. Who broke the candle, George? In fact as the pumps got squatter, prices seemed to go up accordingly. This was at the corner of Concession and Castor Streets. phe puilding now houses apartments.
