Page10 Friday, January 12, 1979 Greely Grist With Barbara Overell The Castor Review would like to greet Greely readers and invite everyone to submit news items. News will be received at the Greely Cheese Shop on the Friday before publication date shown on page 2. My phone number is 821-1155. The Greely ACW recently spent a pleasant evening at the house of Linda McCuaig where a pot luck supper was served. It was a very happy evening. Reverend Gamble was among the group and gifts were exchanged. After the fun, the annual general meeting was held to finish off the evening. After two years of service, Linda retired from the presidency and Doreen Garrett moved up from vice-president. We wish her the same success that Linda had. The joys of living in the country! Today is the kind of day one can do without. The water tank breaks, the fan belt slips on the furnace, and the waste pipe blocks. Try to get help! Thank goodness, the Greely people come to help and the friendly plumber from Russell turns out to. The Dec. 15 dance at the Greely Community Centre was a big success. Two things that made it so were great music provided by Roy Lafontaine's disco and, of course, the excellent turnout. Proceeds of the dance went to Our Lady of Visitation Church as well as towards the purchase of team sweaters for Greely Heights sports activities and the Greely boys novice baseball team. Many Greely residents welcomed in the New Year to the lively strains of "Jug 0' Punch', a fine Irish band featured at the Greely Community Centre New Year's Eve Ball. The celebrations began with a delicious buffet dinner followed by an evening of dancing which even included a few old-fashioned squares. 1979 was welcomed enthusiastic- ally by all. The entertainment committee surpassed itself in organiz- ing an excellent party for our community. The annual Greely Winter Carnival will be held from Jan. 25 to Feb. 4. This annual extravaganza requires a great deal of time and effort on the part of its many organizers and workers. It's worthwhile, however, because it helps shorten the duration of this long, cold season and it banishes mid-winter blues. We hope to have our friends and neighbors from surrounding communities join us in Greely for Carnival '79. Council spent only about $2.000 more than the $965,000 that had been budgeted, a feat which the reeve feels is commendable during times of soaring inflation. The money was used to build two new bridges at Metcalfe, buy three fully-equipped dump trucks and a grader, pave two sections of road and reconstruct a third section, the reeve said. Close to half the money was provided by the Ministry of Transportation and Communic- ations while the reminder came from municipal coffers. "It pays to keep close tabs on work being done,"' the reeve stressed. 'You have to make sure you get your grants on time and that your road crew is as product- ive as possible."' He paid tribute to the road de- partment headed by Rosie Bour- bonnais, superintendent, and Hiram Matchett, foreman. He noted that efficiency has improv- ed since two-way radios were installed in all equipment. During council's inaugural meeting last month, councillor Fred Alexander, chairman of the road committee, expressed pride in the department. "IT have had many verbal as well as written compliments about our roads and the members of the department,"' Mr. Alexand- er said. He noted that next to education, the largest portion of municipal tax money is poured into road and bridge construction and maintenance. "It's a very difficult area because the demands far exceed available resources." Now that equipment is of better calibre, Mr. Alexander said he would like to see more construct- ion and perhaps more paving completed during the next two years. He also emphasized that many smaller bridges throughout the township must be rebuilt, and said he would like to see another grass-cutting tractor and mower purchased. In addition, the payloader -- a large, front-end loader -- should be replaced within a year while the machine now in use is of good, trade-in value. There's also need for a salt shed, the chairman said. Such a Birth Announcement INGLIS -- Norm and Mary are pleased to announce the arrival of Brenda Anne, 7 lbs., 10'» oz. on December 9, 1978 at the Riverside shed would allow the purchase in bulk of salt and flake calcium, resulting in a financial saving for the township.
