CASTOR REVIEW The Russell Legion is throwing its support behind Minor Hockey. Above from left to right: John Ritchie, George Neilson, Omer St. Martin, Bob Morrice, Mike Gloss, Pat Flynn (Pres. of Russell Latimer. Minor Hockey) presenting a cheque for $100.00 to David and Peter and Hugh Latimer are seen Russell lads create playground Russell children are enjoying an exciting new creative playg- round designed and built by two Russell teenagers, Brian Stewart and Philip Cooper with the help of a $2,000 Wintario grant. When they began the six week project in early summer Brian and Philip were both sixteen. The boys had a lot of fun building the playground, alth- ough it was hard work, too. They bought the materials. keeping within a budget of $1,000 and mixed cement, cut wood and put the entire project together. The playground is rather unique in that it includes a Fort, 14 by 14 feet, a suspended bridge, huge tractor tires donated by, Erik Therkelsen, aluminum sli- des, a balance wheel and other imaginative features calculated to delight young hearts, and maybe a few oldsters, too. The boys received wages of $2.15 an hour for their work. The playground can be used winter and summer and can be viewed in the rear of Russell Public School. R.M.H.A. Newsletter This is the second in a series of Newsletters to the Community at large from the Russell Minor Hockey Executive. Since our last attempt. a number of successful fund rais- ing events have taken place. i.e.., - two dances at the arena, a pitch and dunk concession at the Russell Fair. a Thankgiving Turkey Bingo and a Minor Hockey Raffle. The raffle was drawn on the Bingo night, October 2. and the following were the lucky winners: Color T.V.. Mrs. Cayer, Winchester; Roto- tiller, Dave Yandon, Edwards; Power Lawn Mower, Victor Provost, Russell; 10-Speed Bicy- cle, Monique Fraser, Ottawa; Heavy Duty Wheelbarrow, Gary Farmer, Aylmer. At this point we would like to thank all those who participated in any way to make these events such a success with a vote of thanks to the Russell Old Time Music Makers, and the Russell Old Time band for donations of time and talent for our dances. We expect that our next project will be our annual Skate-A-Thon and the date and time will be shortly announced. We have no doubt that the community will again be behind us in our endeavours to put Minor Hockey in the "Black"'. Friday, October 20,1978 Page5 Sports Ramblings By Jack McLaren MAJOR LEAGUE SOFTBALL Although the hockey season is upon us I wouldn't dare leave the softball scene without mentioning the fine season our Bantam and Squirt teams enjoyed this past summer in the Carleton-Russell softball league. When the play-offs finally concluded in September, the Bantam boys coached by Bas Houlahan had captured the Dr. Kinnaird Trophy and the Squirts guided by Gerry O'Reilley walked off with the Weitse Posthumous Trophy. Congratulations to both teams and to all area teams involved in the minor softball program for making it an interesting season. INTERMEDIATE FASTBALL Once again Russell (Cochrane's Dairy) proved to be the superior team and in an exciting final series overcame the Marvelville "A's" to merge as the champions of the Castor Valley Fastball league. At one point the Russell team was down three games to one but fought back to win three in a row. The series was most entertaining and provided a fair amount of good natured "needling"' by both players and fans. Who say the good old days of Russell-Marvelville rivalry are gone? The league doesn't receive the fan support it deserves but for the few faithful who did show up for the final series it was well worth the time and effort. INTERMEDIATE HOCKEY A new Intermediate hockey team known as the Russell Warriors will begin play this season. The team comprised of players from the Russell area is entered in the Russell-Cambridge Intermediate hockey league and will be playing their home games every Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. in the Russell arena. Other teams in the league will include Carlsbad, Limoges, Casselman, Crysler and St. Albert. The basic objective of the team is to provide intermediate level competition for the Russell area players who graduate from the minor leagues but who are not yet ready or interested in playing for the more competitive Russell Raiders.
