Page4 Friday, August 4, 1978 CASTOR REVIEW Sports I don't say that you don't ever see city folk in our fair town. You do. It's not that often but Ottaw- ans and other high-fallootin' what's-your-names from _ the megatrepa lopalis' do occasion- ally roll into town. And it's never more obvious than during the Russell Lions Annual Fastball Tournament. You know it's true. I haven't lived here that long but I wouldn't be anywhere else the weekend of the tourney. There is no reason to go to the big city. Who, are you going to see? Everyone there is out here. I know: "Van Dusen get serious will you .. . there were probably only a couple of people at that tournament that came from outside Russell, and you know that's true, Fess up."' Careful. I do admit I'm exaggerating a little. But one thing cannot be disputed. Crowd turnout was great as it is without fail every year. Perhaps they did not come in hords or"busloads or by dozens on the Castor Bus _ Lines, streaming out of the cities left and right, up and down, over and under. But they were there. Hundreds of them. All you had to do was show your face at the ball park. If you got there too late you had to stand cause sure enough there wasn't any room left for latecomers. By Peter Van Dusen Tourney brings 'em from miles around and Russell Ladies swing The tournament is a proven success just in the fact that it is financially secure enough to repeat itself every year. Addit- ional proof is the fact that tourney winner Williamsburg (who managed to elude the ultimate victory for the past 14 years finishing as the runner-up 6 times in that span) received $700 for winning big. Consolation winners Cardinal Pats received $350. The "A"' division finalists Brockville Commercial Stars also received $350 for their efforts and the "B"' runner-up Turpin Pontiac col- lected 100 bills for its team effort. Fans were treated to excellent hitting, superb batting and young aspiring fastball players could do well to watch any of the top notch teams if they pass through town again. and Kenna warn that the ladies hit like the Yankees and resemble in their baseballiar gyrations the Dallas Cowboys. I'd like to extend many thanks S¢@dy men. Keep reading. to the organizers of the tourna- ment for a job well-done and for providing fans from up and down the Valley as well as the couple I met from upper New York State with great fastball action. I have yet to see the femalius athleticus softballus in action but I am looking forward to taking in a contest before they end their season play. I was kind of partial to the Silver Machine but with the moves of the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders I can save myself a 30 mile drive and take in a Russell ladies softball game right up the street. See you Sunday night gents. Move over fellas. The ladies are swinging .. . the bats that is. Yessir gents the dolls have taken to the diamond. Russell has its very own ladies fastball team. They play every Sunday at the fairgrounds as Linda Weatherall and Kenna Paul point out. Note that Linda Be sure to take in the Russell fair this weekend. It promises to be a good time for all. Marvelville fastball Another season of softball is well underway for one of our local teams. This team is named the Marvelville Z's and as the name implies it represents Marvelville. The team is comprised of men from the Marvelville community. The team has been together now for 4 years and belongs to the Osgoode and district house league which consists of 3 teams from Osgoode, 1 from Ramsay- ville, Union Auto, Prescott and Marvelville. After playing 13 of 17 games this season Marvelville has 9 wins, 2 ties, and 2 losses. At the Russell softball tourna- ment, Marvelville split the money with Richmond in the "A"' division. After winning a game at Metcalfe Lions Tournament, Marvelville won the "A" division against Prescott. The team gave a good showing for the winning of the "B" division against Ormond Dusters and brought home the money at the Prescott tourna- ment. In the Osgoode Deuces tourney Marvelville defeated Ramsay- ville to capture the "A" division honours. Lorraine Eadie Lions Club news The Lions Club would like to thank the residents of the area for their contribution to 2 recent fund-raising events. Fair weather, abundant en- thusiasm and, a shorter, paved route helped over 90 percent of this year's bike-a-thon partici- pants complete the course. Special thanks to the participants and their sponsors. Bikers who haven't yet done so may hand in their pledges to Rolly Tougas, 335 Church or Paul Hart, 445 Conces- sion. The weatherman also. co- operated with the annual Russell Lions Fastball Tournament this year. But the many community volunteers who devoted their time and energy staffing the gate, the chicken barbecue, the beer garden and, the refreshment booth deserve most of the credit. -- NOW OPEN -- Metcalfe Sports Servicing all your Sporting Needs EQUIPMENT -- SPORTS WEAR CRESTING -- BICYCLE SALES & REPAIR RECREATION GAMES -- GOLF SUPPLIES RUNNING SHOES -- CLEATS UNIFORMS We welcome the opportunity to service you METCALFE -- 821-3900 Back row, |. to r.: Brian Robinson, Les Robinson Marvelville Z's Robert, Bob Wilson, Paul Nooyen, Fred Young, (coach), Jim Robinson, Bob Gendron, Wayne John Wilson. Twenty-eight bowlers enjoyed the fast paced, 3 hour event which raised $935.00 in pledges to date, for Club activities. A trip to MacDonald's restaurant for everyone was a welcome treat to those who built up a good appetite while bowling. Three prizes go to those collecting the highest amounts in pledges. Winners and prizes are: 1st prize, a watch, to Max Mayling; 2nd prize, a pocket calculator, to Adele Cardinal and 3rd prize, also a pocket calculator, to Laura Pulfer. We wish to express our thanks to the Prescott Bowling Lanes, the organizers and supporters. A very special thank you to all the participants who made the Bowl-A-Thon such a success. CLUB CREST COMPETITION Figure skating has become such a popular sport in Russell we feel the Club should have its own official crest and we would like your ideas. Club members and those who will be joining the Club in the fall are invited to submit a design for the Russell Figure Skating Club crest competition. Your submission should be drawn in a four inch circle, using three colours or less. Entries will be taken upon registration for the coming season. Dates for registration will be in the next issue of the Castor Review. NOTE: Members of the Executive of the Russell FSC and their families may not participate in this competition. G. J.
