Page 6 Friday, April 7, 1978 Pigs'n Poodles Geoff Cochrane, 26, author of the new column on pet and livestock care, was born and raised on a dairy farm near Russell. He's the son of Elwood and Irene Cochrane. After attending Russell Public School and Osgoode Township High School, Metcalfe, he entered Ontario Agricultural College and later attended University of Guelph. In 1976, Geoff graduated from Ontario Veterinary College with the degree "Doctor of Veterinary Medicine." He has since practised at Dunnville, North Bay, Elmira, and Russell. Last December he was appointed Ottawa animal services officer. He is now head of the animal services section, Ottawa Department of Physical Environment, and chief veterinarian for the city's spay neutre clinic. It's the second such clinic to be established in Canada and the first operated by a municipality. Spay neutre clinics are being set up throughout North America as part of an overall program to control pet overpopulation, Geoff explains. Other facets of the clinics include education, enforcement of licensing procedures, bylaws, and identification programs. He notes veterinary medicine is an ever-expanding field of applied medicine. A "vet" must be knowledgeable in the basic sciences as well as other specific sciences such as anatomy, physiology, pathology, medicine, anesthesia, surgery, and public health. New frontiers in veterinary medicine include wildlife zoo, and marine medicine, spay-neutre clinics, and research - where embyo transplants in cattle and horses is one of the latest breakthroughs with a practical application. Geoff says many young people are expressing an interest in the "vet" profession. He stresses that such a career requires seven years of study after high school graduation; a licence is required in most provinces.
