Castor Review MORE SPORTS Figure Skating in full swing The 1977/78 season gets off to a start on October 3rd at 4:00 p.m. A Class for Mothers will be held from 8:00 - 8:30 p.m. every Wednesday. The CVFSC has ice time on Monday (4:00 - 5:00 p.m.). Wednesday (6:30 - 8:30 p.m.) and on Friday (6:15 - 8:15 p.m.) for lessons and practice ses- sions. The National Figure Skating Program will be used as a background for teaching ALL classes of the Club, and badges may be obtained for those tests successfully completed. Figure skating provided its members with grace, balance, competition inside and outside the Club, and goal attaining. It can also provide hours of enjoyment and a chance to meet new friends. If you have time on your hands, or just feel like getting out and trying something new -- JOIN US AT THE ARENA. Bogie Benders All those interested in joining the Bogie Benders snowmobile club are cordially invited to a meeting Sunday, October 23, at 4:30 p.m. at the Russell Legion Hall. Membership fees are $5 per family a year and must be paid no later than Dec. 1. Current members are also urged to attend the meeting. Area -- 10:40 Heritage Rd. -- 10:50 For information concerning bus transportation, call Bobby Friday, October 7, 1977 Page'5 Church celebrates 90th Anniversary The 90th anniversary services were celebrated at St. Andrew's and St. Paul's United Church, Sept. 25. However, the history of the church dates back much further than 90 years. The Presbyter- ians of the area travelled to Springhill in Osgoode Township and worshipped there for a few years. The first church was built at Luxembourg, then a village one mile east of the present village of Russell in 1858. The lumber was donated and church willing hands erected the church. As the congregation grew and the village of Duncanville (now Russell) became larger, the present church was built on Mill Street in 1888 at the cost of $10,000. It was named St. Andrew's during the ministry of Rev. D. L. Gordon, 1908-1914. In 1925 the Methodist con- gregation of St. Paul's (the church which was later the McCaffrey Warehouse and burn- Andrew's to form St. Andrews and St. Paul's United Chruch. There are no early records of the Methodist Church as they were lost in a fire. The Sunday School Hall was added in 1927 under the leadeship of Dr. A. P. Menzies. Dr. Thomas McNaught minister- ed to the congregation for 25 years. The present minister is Rev. Leonard Woolfrey, B.A. M.P.S. Dr. James Stuart of Alta Vista Baptist Church was the guest speaker at the morning service and brought an inspiring mess- age: "Together with Christ". Special music was rendered by the choir under the leadership of Mrs. J. Twiname, R.M.T. The evening service planned by Mrs. R. W. Gamble. Dan Hay and Rev. L. Woolfrey took the form of a musical program. Greetings were read from Presbytery by Mrs. R. W. Gamble Mrs. Kincaid to run Library Mrs. Jean Todd welcomes Mrs. Ina Kinkaid to the position of Librarian with the Russell Public Library. Mrs. Kinkaid who retired this spring as librarian with the Russell Public School, will assume her new position in September. Mrs. Todd, who has been working on behalf of the Public Library for over four years, will retain her position as secretary on the Township's Library Board. Magazine Campaign The students of O.T.H.S. have decided to undertake a fund-raising project in order to purchase new equipment for the gym.
