My father, my brother and | have applied to the Russell Recreation Association for own- ership of the paper. The association seemed re- ceptive to the idea at its last meeting since the paper has been operating at a loss. The deficit is now more than $1,000 annually, money which could be funnelled back into the commun- ity. The association will decide early this month whether it will turn over the paper. If it agrees, October will see the first edition of a privately-owned newspaper here since the Russell Leader folded during the Second World War. Why become involved in a money-losing business venture, even a small one? We feel with the right direction and a bit of luck, the Review can break even, maybe earn a modest profit eventually, perhaps enough to rent a small office in the village. Ad rates might have to be increased, a subscription fee charged. Obviously, revenues will be limited by circulation which is now 800 without a lot o: room to grow. The appearance of the paper will likely change, the content pulished more often. We'll play it by ear. Most important, the paper will continue - must continue - to rely on people who have dedicated much of their 'time *' toward providing Russell resid- ents with a luxury many larger and more prosperous commun- ities have not been able to afford; people like Suzanne Schroeter, Mary Rowsell, Norm and Karen Bowley and Joyce O'Reilley. In this respect we will be relying on the community even more. My father Tom, a writer and former journalist who recently moved to Russell, my brother Tom who lives in Chesterville and is a working journalist like myself, and | find the concept of a privately-owned newspaper in Russell exciting. We are approaching it with a mixture of seriousness and fun, the way in which one might tackle a new hobby.
