Flowers are funnel shaped usually flaring and ruffled, sometimes hooded, and almost always carried in one sided spike. Exhibited in England early in Queen Victoria's reign it created quite a_ horticultural sensation. More than twelve different species of large flowering Gladiolus have gone into the breeding of this well-known garden and _ florist flower. Individual blooms may meas- ure aS much as eight inches across. The stems grow as much as four, five and six feet high. Flowers are usually self colored, but may have spots or flicks of other colours in the throat. The gladolius is top ranking easy to arrange and long lasting. They should be staked for extra support. The most attractive and effective massive planting was seen years ago in an England garden. Gladiolus in the back- ground and all colors of Alyssum at the front. Do not plant all at the same time. Your soil should be rich non-acid. You may through the growing period fertilize either 20/20 solubile or well rotted manure. If you plant in rows prepare a trench 10" deep, incorporate the fertilizer in bottom, cover with unfertilized soil. Again be very carefull in case of burns and only use when at the five leaf stage. Now you are ready to show expert judges large gladiolus on many points such as: 8 open, 8 closed but showing color, and 8 green buds at the top of the spike; strait stems first flower in direct centre; clear color, no flick's, peeling, streaking; a symmetrical flower. Head with- out breaks in the outline. All flowers must be of excellent tex- ture and substance, attached firmly to the stem. They may be exhibited alone or in baskets or arrangements. Before the planting use a solution of: one teaspoon of Lysol to one quart of water to avoid Thrips. There is a feeling of complete satisfaction at show time when you view the beautiful flowers you have worked so hard for. See you at the plant show!
