"You Make the News" | Russell Review "The Review will not be silenced" Some among us apparently feel it is not the Review's place to take a stand on issues vital to the community. They have gone as far as to suggest that the Russell Recre- ation Association cut off finan- cial support to the paper. Cause of their outrage: The Review's stand against a proposed shopping centre in the village. Association president Peter Romme said there is no question that the Review will continue to receive a $1,000 donation. The association, he said, is not about to play the role of censor. Mr. Romme is aware of the importance of preserving free expression of opinion. The Review under its current editor- ship will settle for nothing less. The Review will continue to take stands on certain issues even if its position is not always the most popular one. In taking a stand against a shopping centre, the Review was concerned with the possible ill effects such development could have on the village. '"'What price convenience?" it asked. By taking a stand, regardless of what is what, the Review obviously succeeded in forcing some debate on the issue. That can only be healthy. The Review still does not think a shopping centre at this time is necessary, expecially a 10-15 store one "in the heart of downtown Russell' as proposed by the Chantal firm. Whatever decision is reach- ed, residents should have the final say based on all aspects of the proposal being discussed. Meanwhile, The Review has only pity for those who would suppress free expression of opinion. Letter to the Editor Dear Sir, | am finally doing something | have often thought of doing but procrastination always seemed to get the better of me. It is to ask you if you would kindly put me on your mailing list. My sister Lola (who with Jessie put in their Summer months in the old home) occassionally sends me a copy of the Review which always has something of person- al interest to me. Your paper is refreshingly different from the old Russell Leader as it was printed by the Lowery boys on their old hand press. | have two copies, one of which has a letter | sent to my father from France in 1916 and one with my father's obituary in 1929 which | cherish. | left Russell for Saskatoon in 1908. Saskatoon was a thriving town of about 4,000 (it is nudging 150,000 now) and have been here ever since. | was down to Russell three years ago but of those | knew as a boy the only ones | met were Billy Booth, Edgar Young, his sister Mabel, George Brown and Maggie Sutherland.
