Halton Hills This Week, Saturday” Se " 4904 — Page 1 May — Region chairman Pomeroy charged by Project 80 investigators Project 80 investigators charged Halton Region Chairman Peter Pomeroy, 54, ‘with two counts of Breach of Trust and two counts of Accept a Secret Commission; Pomeroy’s wife Patricia Crimmins, 51, the Region’s Deputy Clerk, was charged with one count of Offer a Secret Commission; prominent Georgetown lawyer (and Pomeroy’s former counsel) Herbert (Bert) Arnold, 42, was charged with one count of Offer a Secret Commission and former developer Albert (Ab) Tennant, 65, — now a resi- dent of Dundalk — was charged with one count of Offer a Secret Commission, The charges were laid, said Inspector Vaughan O'Toole, head of Project 80, after a “1 1/2-year investiga- tion into allegations of impropriety.”.Project 80 is a joint force comprising mem- bers of the Metropolitan Toronto Police Force, the Ontario Provincial Police and the York Regional Police Force created: to con- duct investigations relevant to alleged criminal impro- Prieties of elected and non- elected public officials in Halton Region. O’Toole told Teporters the present charges relate to the obtaining of properties in both Georgetown and Sarasota Fla. but didn’t comment fur- ther. Pomeroy retained the ser- vices of a Mississauga attor- ney but said “I feel many emotions right now because T really don’t understand the basis of these charges.” Rumors of municipal impropriety surfaced in 1989 concerning a parcel of land in Georgetown south. The 21-hectare (54 acre) property jumped in value from $350,000 in 1981 to $11 million when sold in 1989 and some local resi- dents felt the development company had been promised approval for water and ser- vices without going through the proper procedures. It was also alleged the leap in property value had to do with back room promises. The Hamilton Spectator reported that on March 25, 1987, Pomeroy purchased a condominium unit for $85,000 and that three weeks previously, Tennant paid $91,000 cash for a condo in the same building. The newspaper’s investiga- tion revealed bills being paid from a joint account held by Tennent and Crimmins. Pomeroy, described as a “local boy who made good,” served two years on Town of Halton Hills Council and was then elected Mayor of Halton Hills. ~ Preventable deaths Last year over 4,000 Canadians died in motor vehicle collisions — 85 per cent of which were the direct result of improper dri- ving practices. Most profes- sionals agreed the majority. of traffic accidents are pre- ventable through simple defensive driving tech- niques. The term ‘defensive driving’ was divided into three distinct actions, all of which combine to reduce both accidents and insurance costs. The first step is recog- nizing the potential hazard, the second is understanding the proper action to be taken and the third is taking the necessary action in time. Courses were being con- ducted across the province to allow drivers to upgrade their driving habits.
