Rebs take volleyball home-opener By Mike Zrostek Georgetown District High School Rebels junior and senior girls volleyball teams’ > regular season got off to a ‘Great start Monday at GDHS bal Burlington Central Trojan: The. seniors disposed of Central 15-5, 15-13, while the juniors, fresh off a tourna- ment win last Thursday at Bishop Reding in Milton, beat Central in oes games 15-7, 15-17 and Last Thoin at Bishop Reding, the Rebel juniors won their second tournament in as many tries defeating Notre Dame of Burlington 15-12; 15-10 in the final. The Rebels won eight of 10 games in the round-robin before an interesting match ok place in the semi-finals. GDHS took on the-Acton Redmen in the semis. The Redmen, ironically, are coached by Bob McKay, who teaches at GDHS. The Redmen gave the Rebels all they could handle. taking the first game 14-16, before GDHS rebounded to win the final two games 15- 11 and 15-11. Rebels head coach Fred Kotani and McKay joked afterwards about the rivalry between the two teams. The rematch by the way, is Feb. 9 at Acton High School. Kotani points out his team has plenty of talented players and that makes his and co- coach Shirley White’s job easier. “There are lots of club Players on the team and they’re experienced ball play- ers. Shirley and I are going in without much experience. We just put the players out there and matey perform,” said Kot Cathey O’Brien, Bridget Campbell, Susie Jones and Tanya Osborne stood out in the tournament said Kotani. Kotani credits another GDHS teacher, Russ Linney and his volleyball program, as one of the reasons the girls are so knowledgeable about the game. “By the time they are ready to play junior, the girls already know the basics, which makes it easier to coach.” Next action for the Rebels is today (Wednesday) at Burlington’s M.M. Robinson. Rebels ‘take down’ competition By Mike Zrostek Georgetown District High School Rebel wrestlers con- tinue to gear up for provincial competition, competing in two recent meets in Brampton and Guelph. The Rebels wrestling team was in Brampton last Thursday at J. A. Turner High School and placed second, just eight points behind Centennial of Brampton in the 22-team tournament, Colin Kay and Doug Dutchburn both captured gold medals finishing first in. their Tespective weight classes. Bill Stokes, Mike Egerton, Kevin Withers and Mike Roe were all strong taking second Place in their weight divi- sions. Mike Large, Matt Hamp, Danny Hope, Mike DeRyck, Jason Titus and Jason Myers all placed fifth. Saturday at Collegiate Heights in Guelph, the Rebelg’ were victorious over E.C. Drury of Milton by one point, 15-74 in the 14-team tourna- ment that featured 150 wrestlers, Titus continues to shine this year winning his third tourna- ment of the year in his weight class. Mitch Dodd, Ian Cox, Mike Rowe and ae all came in second on the Dutchburn, Bill Stokes, | Ben Cunningham and Withers earned third place finishes. Jason Myers and Phil Elliott both came in fourth while Matt Edwards, Nick Baker, Rick yoann Ss Patriquin and Hamp all fifth in their respective nn divisions.
