- LETTERS" EDITOR Re: Community Memorial Sanpiaal Board of Directors | hospitals in Ontario County. port previously published in your paper, I am compelled} many Hospital Boards sus- to offer further clarifications} pend regular meetings for of our points, with the hope] July and August. that your readers, and the Vice-Chairman, can obtain a better understanding of the situation, (1) Appointment of Board Members Our remarks were directed to that part of the proposed! reasons for the necessity of bytaws which state that each of the participating munici- palities are to nominate two directors; the County of Ont- ario, the Medical Staff and the Ladies Auxiliary are to nominate one director each. It is our contention that it is more desirable to have as many Board Members as pos- sible elected at the Annual Meeting, thereby ensuring that only persons with a sin- cere interest in the Hospital are responsible for its' man- agement. This method would also eliminate any appoint- ments or dismissals because of political affiliations. Further, we understand that this suggested method recommended by the Ontario Medical Association and the Ontario Hospitals Association. I am pleased to note that the By-laws were approved "in a friendly atmosphere", contact the Cartwright Clerk- Treasurer, who provided us with this figure. In all fairness to the peo- "| ship to the problems associ- ple of Cartwright, I am sure | that they pay a much larger | earlier, the above mentioned hospitals | figures should be available | to the public, as should many amount towards Unfortun- than the above. t ately it would be paid to the Counties ef Northumberland. Durham, who apparenily have refused to support any [@ Gate of te Meetings for July and August Mr. Malcolm states that This is possible, but does not alter my opinion that this Board should not suspend their meetings. Some good reas- ons are: a) A severe lack of parking facilities which should be corrected, b) The entering into a contract with a private firm to provide meals for the Hospital, c) the judgement used in withhold- ing information from a Board Member, (e.g. usage of the Hospital, as described in point No. 6), that in my opinion should be public in- formation, d) The reasons for the resignations from the Board of two very respect- able citizens. (4) Medical Representative not on Management Committee Mr. Malcolm points out how Dr. Cohoon was appoint- ed to the Finance Committee, Our question is why he was net appointed to fhe Manage- ment Committee, when his experience would be of great use to this committee. (5) Lack of Committee Meetings and Reports Mr. Malcolm obviously con- curs with our statement and in fact considers it a compli- ment. If his statement is true that "The number of Committee meetings are or- dinarily in direct relation- ated with the Hospital", then I must ask how the Commit- tees become aware of prob- lems, if not through regular discussion and investigation. Further, if his statement is correct, then the Committees are probably not necessary in the first place. (6) Usage of the Hospital by the Various Munici- palities In my opinion, as stated other facets of the Hospital, operafions, In the light of our report, Mr. Malcolm is more sure now. that he was correct in refusing lo provide me with the figures. I find statements such as this most disturbing and seriously ques- tion what reasons there are for being so secretive. In any event, I will be calling a meeting of the Finance Committee immediately, at which time I may be able to answer this question along with others. In addition to the points discussed previously, I re- cefitly experienced yet an- other disturbing situation. I paid a visit to the Hoépital with the intention of famili- arizing myself with the facil- ities and discussing any prob- lems or complaints with the patients and staff. I was advised by the Head Nurse that notification had been given to refuse me ad- mittance to the Hospital for the above-noted purposes, without my having permis- sion from the Board of Directors. I can only say and say very emphatically, that if a Board Member, because of Board policy or any other policy or reasons requires permission from the Board to make an informal visit te the Hospital, then the situation with the Board is actually much worse than I originally thought, and should be corrected immedi- ately. I must apologize for the length of this correspond- ence, but I sincerely feel that; tients there should be no: room for misunderstandings. Also, I see no reason for' COMMA M Ke Church service at the re- gular time the next two Sun. days in July . There will be no church service the first three weeks in August.
