Following the official open- ing ceremonies, a program of entertainment was present- on the stage of The Forum featuring some of Canada's best-known performers. Among those appearing with TV personality Bill Walker acting as M.C., were Rudy Toth and a 40-piece orches- tra, Catherine McKinnon, Don Harron, Al Cherny, Steve Staryk, Nimmons 'n' Nine plus Six, National Ballet Dancers, the Ontario Place Singers and 800 elementary and high school student singers. Saturday's official opening was the culmination of two years of effort, beginning with the first truckload of fill being dumped into the waters of Lake Ontario, south of Toronto's Exhibition Park. The crowds of visitors are walking over the two man- made islands, viewing the new 96<acre Ontario Place complex, with its five-pod Ontario Place Pavillion, the domed Cinesphere film thea- tre and The Forum The vision began its trans- formation into reality on March 17, 1969, when con- | struction started on the com- | plex on the lake. To create | the two man-made islands at | Ontario Place, more | 2,500,000 cubic yards of fill were needed, with as many | as 1,800 truckloads of fill be- jing dumped each day.
