The top five shooters will be chosen to form the team. The pistol shooters of the club showed that Port Perry doesn't always have to loose in a shooting match. The Peterborough revolver club paid a visit to Port Perry on April 5th. An _ informal shooting match was held and Port was able to edge out Peterborough by 86 points. The match was run off by shooting two targets each of slow fire, timed fire, and rapid fire. The win was only made possible, by Ed Evan's ability with a double action revolver in rapid fire. Automatic pis- tols are usually used for this type of target. Ed had never shot a rapid fire target With his new revolver, and mod- estly called it "lucky". Port Perry will return the Peterborough visit on Wed., May 12 to meet Peterbor- ough on their home range. Scout Master, Fred Fraser invited Gerald Jackson and Charlie Lown to the Scout Hall on April 5th to show the Scouts about guns and gun safety. Neither club member had worked with boys in this age group before but found a very well mannered and very interested group of boys. It is hoped to take the Scouts to the outdoor range and allow them to do some real shooting as soon as weather permits. 'John Greig Using A Piece Of String By E, McCAUGHTRIE Potatoes fresh from the garden are one of the nicest tasting things, Yet, people don't grow this wonderful vegetable "because it involves so much work". Which is one of the most ridiculous statements made, because potatoes will grow almost anywhere, under the most minimal of growing conditions. How- ever as I have frequently said, you do not have to dig the soil to grow vegetables of any sort at any time. Spades are good for mixing cement or moving snow but are not needed in the garden, which seems like a bald statement, but a fork is best for planting or transplanting larger bushes etc. ' Here is my method of growing potatoes, if you don't believe mé try it, Select the area for planting, (it doesn't matter if it has long grass or weeds, if there are some tall thistles pull them up and add to the mulch). Place two stakes at each end of a row, spread two or three inches of hay or mulch, draw the String between the stakes and plant about 1 foot apart, (your choice of seed). Place a foot of hay over, move onto the next row 15" apart and repeat. This caneasily be done along a fence liné;~par- ticularly a south or west facing. They will push up through the mulch and flower as normally, when the tops die down rake the straw aside and there they are, CLEAN potatoes, if Nke me, you like new potatoes, you can always beat the gun by moving the straw and pick a few for supper before you harvest. An excellent idea is to plant a row of Marigolds alongside, these provide a protection against nema- todes which eat the roots. Someone asked nie if it was true that I never used fertilizers, chemical that is. I have found that using a year round mulch eliminates the need for this and by using other plants as pesti- cides have no need for sprays, nature provides it's own protection, a healthy plant is the best of all. But I will talk about beneficial plants and insects another time.
