at atte DITORIAL PINION Airport Not Wanted Here When County Council went on record and voted 29 to 15 for the construction of an international airport east of Yonge Street, they certainty extended an invitation to establish in Ontario County. The votes cast by the various reeves and deputy-reeves indicate the majority of them must favour the idea even if their own town, village or township could be picked a the specific site. thamyshe airport must be located at least 20 miles from the Village. To escape the noise and traffic from cars, trucks and most of all planes, 20 miles is still to close. if @ site east of Yonge Street is chosen the area north of Oshawa including Scugog Island could quite con- cewably be the location. Reeve Cecil Fralick of Scugog Township and his council are all opposed to an airport on the Island. in County Council, he stated an airport would be detri- mental to the Lake Scugog recreation area. We agree with the residents of Scugog Island when they have decided to fight the ugly project, if it is to be located on the Island. The residents of the Island may be told "they stand im the way of progress. "However, to them it could hardly be much worse if an "enemy" invaded the Island. However, there is no doubt, the Federal Government will locate the airport where ever they find it expedient, in spite of protests. being developed into a valuable recreation and con- servation area on what will be the very outskirts of Metro. Although the decision to loéate the airport here has not yet been taken, we should be ready to oppose it if it becomes necessary. A group of uneasy citizens has decided to test the feeling of people in Port Perry, Reach, Scugog and Cartwright about the possible change in our district. Each telephone subscriber will be called. If the majority is against such a new way of life, a committee will be organized to plan a campaign and a public meeting to discuss the situation. What will you say to the following questions? (1) Are you in favour of an International Airport being located in the immediate area of Port Perry? (2) Would you support a movement organized in opp- Osition to the airport? Single Copy 10¢ BILL MILEY UGAR ano TRUDEAU'S WEDDING THE WISDOM OF AGE Belated congratulations to our Prime Minister and his bride. It was one of the big upsets in March. The others were Moh- ammed Ali taking the clobbering of his life- time, and me winning an argument with my wife. Not from the first have I been swept away by Mr. Trudeau's charisma, though the women in my family were. At times I have had serious doubts about his attitude and decisions. But when « man has enough sense to wait until he is 61 to get married, I feel our country is in safe hands. Good gravy, if I had waited until 51, and I'm not there yet, I'd probably be able to ski and scuba-dive. And | might even be prime minister. And a millionaire. But when a man marries at 25, he's had it. He has just thrown away the best twenty- five years of his life; the second twenty-five, Spice That's why so many married men of 50 are washed-up. On shore, or otherwise. If he can keep his head above water during that first period, he's a mighty strong swimmer. But in the process, he has developed hardening of his physical, emot- ional and mental arteries. And just about then, he is pulled out of water, purple and gasping, and told that he is entered in another marathon. In short, the kids are in their teens, swim, baby, swim. It really racks me to think of the gifts I have squandered in nearly twenty-five years of marriage. Especially when I think of Mr. Trudeau. ° We're very much alike. He's a little older and has a little less hair. Probably more teeth, unless they're falsies. About twenty-five years ago, we were on equal terms. Both in excellent physical condition. The only real differences I can see are that he had a jot of brains and a lot of money. And I chose to swim upstream, while he chose to swim down. Perhaps there's one other minor diff- erence. He does everything well, and I do everything poorly. But don't forget he's had two and « half decades to practise -- every- thing from skiing to chess -- while I've had to eateh them on the run.
