In the early 1900's, senior 4" stu- dents from Milford went to Picton to try their exams, then returned to Milford to attend high school. In the 1940’s the entrance exams were written at the Milford school by all the grade eights from their commu- nity schools. After passing their entrance, children if able, attended high school in Picton. In 1900-10, the east end of the school was the boys’ side of the playground, the girls’ was the west end. Both sides had a ball diamond and were kept completely separate. In 1914, one young stu- dent’s lunch, carried to school ina tin lunch pail, consisted of four sandwiches, a cookie and an egg. In 1916, 2 sets of ex- ams were written, a set at Christmas and the finals in June. One morning when one of the boys came to school early to start the fire, he put hot cayenne pepper on the stove. School couldn’t begin until noon as the school took that long to air out. In 1945, chem- ical toilets were installed. The children took turns carrying water for the toilets at night, bringing it from the house across the road. There was also an inside drinking foun- tain installed. The library and girls’ cloakroom were convert- ed for these purposes. The girls then shared the boys’ cloakroom and between 1947 and 1950 the blueprints for electrical lights were made and the lights installed. In 1950, the boys and girls all played together. Around 1945, roads could not be ploughed for six weeks. Horses and cutters were driven right over the drifts and snow banks. From 1877 (opening of first school), until around 1940, the grades were numbered as one to four plus highschool. In 1950, class pictures began to be more widely distributed. *School days written by Will D.
