South Bay United Church By Dorothy Speirs On Sunday, November 1g South Bay United Church members gathered to honour past and present members of the UCW (United Church Women) who, after serving the church and com- munity faithfully for 61 years, made the difficult decision to disband. UCW treasurer, Joyce Minaker, addressed the con- gregation, remembering when she joined the UCW in 1967. At that point, there were three UCW’s in the South End — South Bay, Black Creek and Long Point. The members devoted their time and energy to organizing church dinners, catering to receptions, and making and 7 Dd CHESTNUT PARK selling quilts, among m: other activities. The con- siderable sums raised were donated to the church and to various charities in the community. In 2000, declining mem- bership brought about a fusion of the three units into one, but the UCW ac- tivities continued, uniting women of the community in friendship and spiritual fellowship. Sandra Emlaw, the last president, lit can- dles in memory of those women of the South Bay unit who had served the organization so faithfully.
