A few weeks ago, I wrote about people using the word protein to mean meat when, in fact, there are many non-meat sources of protein. A similar thing happens with carbohydrates. People say they are not eating carbs, implying that carbs are the devil. In truth, they are still eating carbs, just not eating some carbs. Especially at this time of year, people think that by avoiding carbs, they will lose weight. The truth is that carbohydrates are an essential nutrient that should be part of every meal. They are one of three primary types of nutrients converted by the body to be used as energy. (The other two are protein and fat). This energy is measured as calories. Carbohydrates consisting primarily of starches and sugar are broken down by the body to form glucose, the sugar that fuels our cells. These days, people are so focused on carbohydrates that they call food "carbs," as "I love carbs," or "I ate carbs for breakfast." The fact is though that most foods combine protein, carbohydrates, and fat. These are the vegan food groups that contain carbohydrate: Grains and anything made from grains (bread, pasta, rice, oats, quinoa, barley, etc) Fruit Starchy vegetables (potatoes, corn, peas, and beans) Beans contain carbohydrates, protein, fibre, and other nutrients. Carbohydrates are also found in other vegetables but in smaller amounts. Carbs Are Not The Devil Plant-Based Eating by Sheree Nicholson Eating a wide variety of vegetables is recommended. All of these foods are part of a healthy diet: Grains contain fibre, B vitamins (thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, and folate) and minerals (iron, magnesium, and selenium). Fruits and vegetables are naturally low in fat, sodium, and calories. They are the source of many essential nutrients often lacking in diets, including fibre, potassium, vitamin C and folate. Fibre in grains, fruits and vegetables may help reduce blood cholesterol levels and lower the risk of heart disease, obesity, and Type 2 diabetes. It is also essential for bowel health. A healthy intake of carbohydrates is critical for your body to function correctly and is crucial in obtaining a healthy weight. Of course, some carbohydrates are less beneficial such as sweets, desserts, and chips. Canadians often consume too much sugar-sweetened soft drinks, sports drinks, cakes, cookies, candy, pie and chips. Calories from added sugar and fat, but minimal nourishing good stuff are often called "empty calories." Still, even these foods are not the devil. They taste good and eaten occasionally will not harm you. You don't need to eliminate them from your diet, but you should limit their intake and not use them as a substitute for more nutritious alternatives. Sheree's hack: Reach for healthy carbs and eat the "rainbow." This means adding a wide variety of vegetables and fruits to your diet.
