Children Cry FOR FLETCHER'S CASTORIA 'MITCHELL. Jan. 26 --Mr. H. H. Haines, of Galveston, Texas, a former natiye of Toronto, has been visiting his sister-in-law, Mrs. Fred. W. Sher- wood, St. Andrew's et. This is his first visit in Canada during the winter for 30 years. On Sunday last he had his first sleigh ride in that time to At- Ww with Mr. and Mrs. Sherwood, and although the day was cold and stormy he enjoyed the trip. He cer tainly founda great change in the climate as a few days before leaving home for Canada he picked ripe straw- berries out of his own garden. The 'Annoal Meeting of the policy- Holders of the Elma farmers' Mutual Fire Insurance Company, was held in the Agricultural ball, Atwood, on Tuesday the 23rd January, 1917. A good attendance of those interosted present, Jas. Donaldson presided over the meeting in the capacity of chair- van in'his usual efficient manner, while J. R: Hammond acted as sec- retary of the meeting. After making a few remarks as to the success of the Company since its organization and its present satisfactory condition the Chairman asked the Secretary to read the minutes of the last annual meeting, which were adopted as read. The Financial Statement and Auditor's report was read and adopted The report showed that the Company had 1364 policiesin force at the 31st December 1916. Covering' property to the extent of $4,727,260.00. and had premium notes amounting to $236,363 64, the unassessed residue of those being $220,134,78, that the company had paid $3763 64 for losses and bad $730 31 for expense of man- agement and hada balance on hand of $13,704.25 nnd an uncollected balance of the 1916 leyy of $450 83. JJas. Thompson and A. M. Sweeton were re-appointed Auditors for 1917. James Moffatt, John S. Cowan and Geo. Cleland were re elected Directors for the coming term. After tendering the chairman a hearty vote of thanks for the capable manner in which he had conducted the business, the meeting adjourned. After the close of the annual meeting the board of irectors consisting of S. J, Love D. B. Grieve, Jas. Moffat, John Den- stedt, Geo. Cleland, T. E. Shearer J. K. Baker, J.S. Cowan, and Ivy D. Smith, met for organization. All being present but Mr. Grieve. S. J. ve was te appointed President for 1917 T. EB. Shearer Vice President and J. R. Hammond Secretary and Treas- urer. A claim was presented from Wm. A. Michael, Groy Tp., for $1,- $00 00 for loss of his house and con- tents, by fire supposed from furnace January 21st 1917 which was paid in full. J. A. Turnbull representative of the Great Western Permanent Loan Co. addressed the board re in- vestment of the Company's cash bal- ance in that institution, laid over for future consideration. , Applications for Insurance were accepted amount- fog to $102,525,00. It was resolved that the fee for taking applications be $1.00 cach in future. Sec. Elma Agricultural Society -Annual Meeting. ' The ancual wecting of the Elma Agricultural Society was held in the Agricultural hall, Atwood, on Satur- day, January 20th. Mr. Young Coulter was appointed chairman aud T. G. Ratcliffe, secre- tary Tho President was then called ap- on and gave a short resume of the years' work and suggested that an effort be made to secure an increased membership for 1917. Ee also gave a report of the meeting of the Fair's Association at Toronto in Feb, 1916, which was well received. The minutes of the last ancual meeting were then read. The minutes and auditor's report was adopted as read, showing a bal- ance on hand of $85.42. The list of paid up members for 1917 was then read. This was fol- lowed by short reports of the year's work by retiring directors -- Wm. Morrison, Jobn Ballantyne, I. D. Smith, Geo. Gordon, W. Dickson and W. A. Dickson. The matter of holding a spring fair be left with the directors for 1917. It was decided to enter the Field Crop Competition in 1917, provided that 20 members enter the competi tion with an entry fee of $1.00 each and that oats be the crop selected. The selection of judges is left with the directors. The following officers were elected for 1917. President-- William Morrison. lst Vice-President--J. Ballantyne. 2nd Vice President--I. D. Smith.
