Adam Beck Announces the Gov- . eroment's Plan, . ---o A Co-operative Body of Twenty Farm. ers May Have Line Built on Easy Terms, and Pay for it in Fifteen or Twenty Years. the London, Dec. 8.--Speaking to-day to the Middlesex County Council, Hon. Adam Beck announced the Govern- ment"s plan for supplying power to farmers. Low tension wires are to be erected to radiate thirty miles from the power centres. The Government would adopt the same principle as the muni- cipal telephone system. As twenty farmers could go to the County Council and have a telephone line erected, pay- ing for it on the same basis as a local improvement, so would the ---- foster the power lines. "In a Government would be but the "financial agents of the people. We will ercct tue low tension lines, which you will pay for at the rate of 4 per cent. on the investment, retiring the indebtedness at the end of fifteen or twenty years in the same manner as retiring debentures." Commenting on Hon. Mr. Beck's an- nouncement, the London Free Press says: What this may mean to the farmer cannot be overstated. The day is at hand when conditions on the farm will so far be improved as to distinctly lessen the contrast between farm life and that of the dweller in the cities. The drudgery of the farm will largely forces at work that will relieve the strain which has bent the back of many a noble yoeman and made his wife pre- maturely old. Modern appliances in the house, in the dairy, the and barns and in the field will all come un- 1 Has. She yey ofthe resistlesa electric carrent.> The bome will be lighted as it never has beep, and the vacuom cleaner will reduce the slavery invoived in the ceaseless struggle against dost and dirt. The cows will be milked, the separator operated and the churn kept in motion by the same subtle influence. At the barn the feed choppers, fanning mille and fodder handlers will respond to the tune of electric motors. The next few years will witness a wonder ful revolution. Already the farmer is coming into his share of the benefits of the public ownership of Niagara power, with trolley cars passing his door, the telephone at his elbow and bydro-elect- ric energy ready to do bis bidding. An Enjoyable Holiday Number, --o-- The large firms of Leavy-draft horse users in our leading cities find that tho price of borsefleah has been on the up- ward trend for the past twelve years, according to on articles published in tbe 1910 Christmas number of that old re- liable agricultural journal. The Farmer's Advocate and Home Maga- zine." The article referred to is the outcome of a personal inquiry by the horse editor of " The Farmer's Advo- cate" into market conditions in our leading centres of popuiation, and shows that city prices of this favorite live of farm horse stock have risen about thirty-five dollars in the last decade, with prospect of further advance. This same special nomber gives the results of the second year's operations in " The Farmer's Advocate" demonstration ceebatd at Lambeth, which, even in the " off" season ef 1910, has Cc rained. $50 worth of Spies.
