Flint, ' Cc man, at London, Ont., has arrived here to take charge of the remains of his daughter, Mrs. Atkinson, who was accidentally killed here yesterday. Mrs, Atkinson and her husband were on the east bank of the Flint River at a point where they had planned to spend an hour or so fishing. On the opposite side of the stream John Kinney and his two step-sons, Arthur and John, were out with their rifles for target practice. Suddenly Arthur spied a white cloth fluttering among some shrubbery on the east bank, and, raising his gun to his fired. An instant later Mrs. Atkinson fell, blocd streaming from an ugly wound in her forehead. The bul- let entered just above the right eye and penetrated the brain. She died a mo- ment after her husband reached her side. Young Merritt is almost insane as a result of the accident and it has been necessary to place him under restraint, for he declared shortly after he learned that Mrs. Atkinson was dead that he would kill himself at the first opportu- nity. The dead woman's husband says that his wife was wiping some dust from her face with the handkerchief when the bullet struck her. Ho heard the piece of lead whiz by him aud was about to yell to his wife when she sank to the ground, mortally wounded. The fishing pole which she carried was still clutched be- tween her fingers when she died. ICE 500 REST HIGH, Stories of Ice on "Newfoundland Told y Mar a. New York, May * 24.--Bringing first hand accounts of the phenomenal ice prevailing off the Newfoundland banks, n which the Allan liner Mongolian was held a prisoner for two days, two Brit- ish steathers came into port to-day. They are the Bisley from Clydo and the Madura from: Newcastle. While the Madura showed but a few scratches on her sides her escape so lightly was ciore a matter of xdble seamanship and good luck than anything else. The Bisley fared worse and will have to go into dry dock here. - She lost all of her propeller blades except one and her sides and hull were damaged. The Madura was near the Mongolian during the latter's perilous experience and communicated with her from time to time by the Morse whistle system According to the Madura's log the ico was seen first off the banks at 4 a. m. on Monday last. THE KING'S PLATE. Who will win ? Who do yon like ? Was asked on every hand when the feature of the tard, "The King's Guineas," were to be contested for in the fifth race. A gentleman escorting two ladies offer- ed Shimonese as an answer. Almost in the one breath they replied: That they did pot think it right nor fair to go back on Seagrav:. Thus the mighty throng surged towards the betting ring. Shim- onese opened ateven money, while the Seagram entry opened at 7 to 5, raising steadily until 4 to 1 was reached. Shimonese receded to 3 to 5, going to the post at 4 to 5 Then the race. Fort Garry broke in front with Tollendale at his heels. Shimonese was fifth, leaving the barriers, went through on the inside for third place at the quarter pole, Tollendale and Fort Garry ran as in the back stretch, setting a tremendous pace, with Shimonese at least seven lengths be- hind. It was mid way of this stretch that Gilbert set him down. coming up with the leaders'at the three-quarter pole and passing them as if they were -anchored. Shimonese came down the stretch, well in band, and was far from being a in, going under the wire in 2.10 1-5, lowering the record of the plate 4.3 of a second. GIPSY SMITH IS FACETIOUS, --e-- Gipsy Smith may not be a higher critic. He may not think any more of higher criticism than either Hor. S. H. Blake or Dr. Elmore Harris, but if the goed old Bible is good enough for the evangelist, he doesn't exactly adopt the oid method of imparting its teachings. An incident at one of his Toronto meet- ings indicated the soul-saver's attitude toward -the stereotyped and dignitied method of piloting the wanderer to the penitent bench. It was atthe closo of one mecting; which was to be followed by an after meeting. Tbe sedate gentleman acting as chairivan had just requested the ushers to see that the women depar by way of certain doors. "Don't let a single woman out by that door," he admonished tho down below. Then Gipsy Smith rose to his fect, with this correction or addition : "And don't let a married woman out that way either." "You will break up the meeting," the chairman said, in mild rebuke ; but tho evangolist would not stay rebuked. "It will break up the stiffness, you mean," was the way he came back at the dignified chairman, who, however, eventually recovered from the shock. Dr. Hamilton Follows Nature's Plan. Walter Damrosch, leader of the New York Symphouy orchestra, is responsi- ble for the new theory that "high gtade wusic in the family" will ward off danger of a disinal divorce decree. Mr. Damrosch has read, as has every one else, the census reports showing that one out of every twelve marriages ends in the divdree court. He adds that it furnishes a peaceful topic of conversation, leads the har- ried thoughts of husband ang wife to- ward high ideals (as opr to the aforementioned price of bacon and eggs) and keeps the fire of family af- fection burning brightly and warmly on the domestic hearthstone. Continuing, Mr. Damrosch explains: ere is more domestic discord in the American home than in that of any other country on the globe, and | believe it is because there not enough cultivation of the finer things of life. There is little family music: or art of any kind, and there is small wonder that elements of discord enter when there is nothing more diverting than calculation on the cost of butter, eggs and bacon." age 7 OS Do You Lack Self-Control.
