We look forward to your continued good-will and sincerely hope that 1940 will be a prosperous year for one and all. 9 ° Besse's Dairy Products HOWARD E. BESSE, Proprietor READ THE MIRROR ADS. IT PAYS "RAIDERS' NIGHTMARE" Britain's Many War Uses for Steel Rope When the King visited balloon bar- rage units recently, he was told of Britain's secret weapon of defence. "A new method of making the bal- loon defence even more effective," is the cryptic official description of a means which brings certain destruc- tion to enemy aircraft coming in the slightest contact with this "raiders' nightmare." I have visited a factory where Brit- ish hands and machines are turning out steel rope for all three fighting Services. Some of it is destined to go into the skies, as the mooring rope for the balloon defence now being made in hundreds of thousands of yards; some of it will go down into the seas in the form of submarine nets; mine mooring rope, and its arch-enemy the minesweeping rope, whose job is to cut through the mine moorings. Thus I saw how the for- tunes of war "hang on a wire'; how steel ropes and cables need be no less essential to a war effort simply be- cause they lack the spectacular appeal of tanks and guns. I saw, too, the uncanny adaptability of British industry to meet the needs of war while maintaining those of home and export commerce. HITLER IS SANTA CLAUS To the Makers of British Toys Santa Claus will bring more British- made toys to children of Empire coun- tries this Christmas than ever before. Children want realism and the topi- cal touch, so this year's "fashion" is chiefly for working models of war- ships, complete balloon barrage units, the mechanised Army, and of course soldiers and guns. The biggest toy manufacturers in Britain, and probably in the world, state that their Christmas export ord- Jers this year are far greater than last year, and the war has stimulated the trade, for orders. during the second month of the war showed a big ad- vance on those for October, 1938, the nonth after the "peace of Munich." "The Great War did a great deal to astablish Britain's toy industry at the xxpense of Germany, and now the British blockade is helping history to epeat itself," said Mr. Walter Lines, oresident of the British Toy Manufac- 'urer's Association. "In recent years *ritish makers have given special at- tention to realistic, scale-model nechanical toys instead of producing 'omething bigger for the money, but nceorrect in detail. Consequently we aave beaten the Germans at their own game." Traditional Christmas toys like dolls and rocking horses are also being shipped by the hundred thousand all over the Empire, and among foreign lands, the countries of South America, particularly the Argentine, are good customers. Even the children of Ice- land will find British toys in their Christmas stockings. FROM CHINA TO PERU Orders Reach Britain for Diesel Engines Orders for marine Diesel engine in- stallations are reaching British build- ers literally from China to Peru. Thornycroft's, the world-famous builders of high-speed naval and other vessels, have now a number of con- tracts in hand. Aimong them is one for a four-cylinder 36/47 b.h.p., Diesel unit for installation in a tug: under construction in Peru. They are also working on two six- cylinder Diesels, each of 145 b.h.p. These are for a fast launch being built at Singapore and will be des- patched shortly for service in Chinese waters. For another launch which will be used on a timber plantation in Belize, British Honduras, Thorny- croft's are supplying a Handybilly 9 b.h.p. petrol engine. From Brazil they have an order for a six-cylinder 70 b.h.p. Diesel, and a Thornycroft converted Ford V-8 en- gine.
