LAIRD To most people moods are eternal puzzles, inscrutable and inexplicable. No one knows whence they come or where they go, but one has them, and gets over them. Science, however, has recently dis- covered that our periods of gloom and despair, on the one hand, and our periods of enthusiasm, pep and go, on the other, are by no means matters of chance or circumstance. They are not, as we have long supposed, simply reactions to the success or failure of our plans, to harsh or kind treatment by friend or foe, or to the good or bad luck of everyday life. On the contrary, they grow within us, inde- pendent of the outside world, and as a direct result of the rise and fall of our emotional energy. It also has been proved that our bodies and minds produce, store up and spend our emotional energy in regular cycles. The average runs Somewhere between four and _ five weeks. In other words -- and here is the really startling and enlightening part -- all through' life the individual human is at regular intervals "down in the mouth" and "up in the clouds" in his attitude toward _ relatives, friends, situations, jobs, plans or pros- pects. He cannot avoid this regular ebb and flow of hope. But he can learn to predict what his mood may be at a given future time, much as; the weather man predicts the weather. Thus he can prepare himself for vary- ing moods, and discount their often baleful, sometimes suicidal, effects. At first blush, you may be inclined tc protest -- as was the writer -- and exclaim, "Why, if moods were as regu-, lar as that, certainly I would have per- ceived the fact in myself and others." But would you? First, the progress toward our black moods is a downward big-zag -- we go down a little way, come back a little, Sometimes slowly, sometimes sharply -- so that the controlling down trend is obscured by many conflicting sec- ondary trends. Second, unless our at- tention had been called to it, no one of us, in the hurly-burly of everyday affairs, would think to watch his moods closely and long enough to see whether he had an emotional cycle. But conclusive proof of the regular recurrence of "up" and "down" moods in all of us is found in experiments by Professor Rexford B. Hersey at the University of Pennsylvania. Every day for two years, psychologists under his direction kept constant records of men employed in a great Pennsylvania factory. Among the many cases charted, one elderly "settled" man known in Dr. Herrsey's two-year re- cord as "Worker A," was inclined to scoff at the idea that he could be af- Your Ups and Downs Much to his surprise, the final record showed that he had regularly alternat- ing down cycles, when he became grim, refused to joke, drew into himself, and grumbled at his bosses; and up cycles, when he was cheerful, efficient in an easy-going way, content with himself and life. On the other hand, "Worker B's" cycles were so marked in effect upon him that everyone in the factory was aware of his moods. The two- year record showed that his normal | cycle was about 24 days. When he | was at the peak of his up cycles he ,not only was a fine, cheerful hand, in- 'terested in labor-saving devices and ; the like, but also after working hours toiled tirelessly at amateur painting. Correspondingly, in his down cycles he was slow, indifferent and cynical at the shop, and in the evenings usually took to poolroom lounging. Thus the record went. In _ their down cycles, many of the men had trouble at home, and came to work gloomy. Others fought and argued at the drop of the hat. Still others railed against pay cuts, government, working conditions, etc. And in the up cycles these same workers were exactly the opposite. Curiously en- ough, they slept better in their down cycles, the result indubitably of low emotional energy, and were restless in the up cycles, as though the energy then stored up, seeking outlet, would not let them rest. For my own part, no sooner did I hear of Dr. Hersey's astonishing dis- covery than I set about to find out my own emotional cycle. After weeks of observation I had first-rate evi- dence i na chart that. my emotional energy cycle is one of about six weeks. In the same way, anyone can deter- mine his emotional cycle. And what is more he can derive from the know- ledge a gratifying and _ interesting benefit. Take your own changing way of looking at things, or that of your wife, sweetheart, employer or subor- dinates. Like everyone else, in one degree or another, you and they re- gard troubles--financial, marital, so- cial or economic -- as overwhelming and almost too great to bear one day and on another these same troubles secm merely hurdles to be jumped and you have a personal conviction that you'll get by some way, sure. Well, what about it? Simply this: Supposing you knew of Dr. Hersey's emotional energy cycles, and that you had ascertained not only your own but that of your better half. Then, in your own black mood, you would say, "I am in the blue today," and would refuse to let your troubles bear down upon you, would refuse to strug- gle and worry about them, because you would know that when your good mood came back again--as it surely would--you would be in a far better, more efficient and confident frame of mind to solve your problems. Or, see- ing your wife morose and uninterest- ed in you and your problems, you would not protest or scold; on the con- trary, you would wisely say to your- self, "She's got the down cycle blues, and of course she can't help it." There is no doubt that many of the dramatic suicides of this day, like those of Krueger, the match king, Eastman, the kodak king, and Loew- enstein, the financier who dropped to death from a trans-channel airplane, have a definite relation to this emo- tional energy cycle. Surely had these men known this truth of the cycle, they might have waited for their up periods before taking such fatally de- | cisive action; and then, with the old ' nerve and power on tap, have scorned taking their own lives and have come through all right again. For all of us, too, the same thing may be true. By making momentous decisions, by undertaking major enter- prises and by making important hu- man contacts so far as possible only in our up cycles, science now assures us we can be far more sure of ulti- mate success, and can discount and avoid the heavy handicap in such things of disconsolate, defeatist down cycles.
