i ia Te THE STRATFORD MIRROR Here and There (Continued from first page) hey to Ottawa and take a firm grip on the reigns of government. * * * The' definite superiority of the "talkies" over the old silent screen pictures was proven recently in rather an odd manner, in this city. In the an- cient days of screen silence, the ani- mated cartoon type of comedy was decidedly disliked by a large number of theatre patrons. Now, however, there is scarcely a person who does not look forward with keen anticipa- tion to seeing a "Mickey Mouse" or "Krazy Kat" picture. With sound and music synchronization, these delight- ful little comedies add spice to any bill. Accordingly, when it was announced at a recent concert at the band stand in Lakeside park that a certain co- medy of 'Felix the Cat would be shown, the audience, fed with numer- ous Mickey Mouse pictures, settled down for a few moments of real en- joyment. But when the pictures began to flicker over the screen, everyone was aware of a vague feeling of dis- appointment, which increased as the picture continued. The truth was that the silent picture seemed insipid, colorless and almost boring--simply because it was silent. If silent pictures were suddenly sub- stituted in Stratford for the present "talkies,"*--a howl undoubtedly would be raised that would send the sheep up in Mornington township scuttling for safety. Unlike the old silent pic- ture, the average "talkie" provides an evening of pleasant entertainment. Very few prove to be boring. And the unusual ones provide an opportunity for actors and actresses to express themselves to the fullest extent, with the result that there is no comparison with the old silent picture. Examples of the heights to which the talkies may rise have been given in "The Last of Mrs. Cheyney,' star- ring Norma Shearer and Basil Rath- bone, which was one of the earlier "talkies; "Disraeli," with the one and only George Arliss in the title role; Greta Garbo in "Romance," and, last and greatest, "All Quiet on the West- ern Front." * * * "P. O'D.," a feature writer for "Sa- turday Night,' remarked in his last article that the greatest improvement he noted in Toronto on his return from a protracted visit in England was the elegance of the bathrooms. Unusual care of great interior decorators had been bestowed on the chambers where- in the ablutionary activities of pro- minent Torontonians take place. If this beautiful bathroom move- ment continues in Toronto, Stratford will have to look up to its laurels. At the present moment the Classic City has within its boundaries the slowest bather in the Dominion. When the plaudits of the multitude are be- ing showered up on endurance air- plane pilots, endurance car. drivers, flagpole sitters and tree sitters, let the name of Stratford's long-distance, non-stop, 100% talking, singing, danc- ing and technicolor endurance bather not be forgotten. Let his name be handed down in the annals of Strat- ford on Avon.. Friendship forbids as to disclose his name, but a few dis- creet inquiries on the part of anyone who is interested will reveal 'his iden- tity. On one occasion the local youth has gained such renown is known to have taken over four hours to bathe, shave and dress, counting the time out for the paring of finger nails and for washing behind the ears. His usual time, however, for bathing alone (please take the correct meaning from that phrase) is two hours flat, East- ern Standard time, or one hour and fifty minutes, Daylight Saving. Let us hope that Toronto's madness for more beautiful bathrooms passes, or a champion may be produced in the Queen City to rival Stratford's pride. airs Now is the time to order your new --- Floor Coverings Our stock is complete.
