Wishing Bay By Angelo Patri (Copied from January Red Book.) The setting apart of New Year's Day as a day of good resolutions, of wishing, is not an accident. There is within each of us a craving for one more chance, a fresh start, an- other step forward. Though we have failed with each rising and setting of the sun, we crave with anxious eagerness that chance to try once more. Anybody can wish, and any- body, everybody, does; but not all wishes have the creative quality that makes them come true. Some of them are foot- loose things with neither root nor branch, and fade away on the breath that voiced them. The real ones spring from the inner being; they color every thought, every action and steadily point forward to the goal. Perhaps you remember George Madden Martin's story of Emmy Lou, the little. girl -- who failed daily in spelling, but with all the strength of her sturdy heart, longed to win the silver medal, the prize for per- fect spelling. Emmy Lou as- tonished her world by winning the medal. As. her teacher handed it to her, she said, "But you will need a blue ribbon for it, dear." "J have it already, said Em- my Lou calmly, and stepping to her desk, 'she took a tiny tissue- wrapped package from under the cat-stitches of the cover of Arithmetic Book One, and handed Dear Teacher one yard. and a quarter of blue satin rib- bon that had been there all term. What is your wish this New Year's Day? Go apart a little in the quiet, and summon it to the chamber of your mind. Drop off the trouble and care that beset you. Sweep clean your thought so nothing can hinder the approach of this shy trem- bling vision you would make your own. It is not necessary to clench your fists and knit your brow and shout, "T will." Take its coming and its realiz- ation for granted.. Then plan for it and without force or fear allow it to have its way with you, and it will carry you through. This is the true in- wardness of the New Year's Resolution. Mark that it is to carry you. WEAR, ---- ---- are re \ You need not carry it. Trust it. Go ahead with your daily duty, certain of your power, certain of the success of your idea, the truth of your deep 'wish. Keep step with your vision in the simple faith of a child who knows that the deep wish always comes true. It must come true because it it the expression of your real self. It is the voice of your peculiar gift speaking through you to the world. Once you have accepted it, you will find it shaping your action and heading you toward your goal. What you think that you are. What you wish most to do, that you do. Nothing that any- one can do will alter the truth, once you have made it your own. ; Let nothing hinder you from making your New Year Reso- lution, from making your wish at the stroke of midnight. Make it with fasting and prayer if you like, but make it. And may this Wishing Day be the happiest New Year of them all for you. Happy New Year! NOW PLAYING-- NEXT MON. - TUES. - WED.
