THE MIRROR YOUTH RECAPTURED (By Oscar H. Roesner) Where is dreaming rapture sold? Only in the booths of youth. Where are castles built of gold? Only in the books of truth That we read, with eyes a-gleam, In immortal days of dream. Where are fairy fancies spun But in hearts forever young? Where are days all flower and sun But in years that still are hung With the mystery and grace That enshrine youth's wistful face? Thus I spake in accents sad Of fain youth's supernal boon: Little knew my words were mad, 'That my soul would sense full soon All the glories of lost youth-- Pictured on the films, in truth! A Scotchman, on a motor trip through one of the larger cities, seemed somewhat puzzled as to why 3 lights were placed at street cross- ings; so stopped a traffic officer for information. He said: I understand the red light mean "stop," the green light, "go," but what does the yellow light mean? It means: "Scotchmen start your motors!" Police--"Why did you run away after breaking that window?" Boy--'I was running home to get the money to pay for it." He--I sleep with my gloves on to) keep my hands soft. Ole, the night porter, was testify- ing before the jury after the big bank robbery. "You say," thundered the attorney, "that at midnight you were cleaning out the office and eight masked men brushed past' you and went on into room with revolvers "And a moment later a terrific ex- plosion blew the vault door off and the same men went out past you carrying currency and bonds?" '¥an,": said Ole. "Well, what, did you do then?" "Aye put down my mop." "Yes, but then what did you do?" "Vell, aye say to myself, 'Dig bane queer way to run a bank.'" NONSENSE It was midnight on the ocean Not a street-car was in sight The sun was shining brightly For it rained all day that night. It was evening and the rising sun Was setting in the west, While the little fishes in the trees Were huddling in their nests. While the organ peeled potatoes Lard was rendered by the choir When the sexton rang the dish-rag Someone set the church on fire. Holy Smoke the preacher shouted As he madly tore his hair Now his head resembles Heaven For there is no parting there. The On- tario street Baptist, the Parkview United and the Centennial Evangel- ical were the churches thus celebrat- ing and most successful services were held by all three on Sunday and Monday. Such services are of great interest and value to a church for they attract people from outside the regular congregation and thus pos- 'sible new members become jinterest- ed. Es * * The resignation of D. A. McLachlan as a member and as chairman of the Public Utilities Commission is to be regretted. There is still doubt about the legality of the affair and some legal opinion thinks that Mr. Mc- Lachlan was eligible to sit. Hon. I. B. Lucas in his letter on the subject rather begs the question and fails to give any definite answer. Mr. McLachlan has resigned because he felt that with conditions such as they are good work was not possible in the commission. About the best thing that could happen now would * * * be for the whole commission to quit. It becomes increasingly clear that there is a spirit in the commission that is more out for personal gain than for the puble weal and bodies Fraser's OUR PRINT DEPARTMENT Prints.are prominent for both day and evening wear and in every type of material.
