RETRO oa cob THE MIRROR The fate of Vanzetti and Sacco is creatng a world-wide controversy. In the eyes of an impartial public who -believe in true justice, they should be considered innocent until they are proved guilty. And no person can be proved guilty through circumstantial evidence. * * * It is quite evident to a close ob- "server that there are Many empty houses in town. But that does not seem to retard to any great extent the building trade. Many new houses have gone up this summer, and many more are in the course of construc- tion. Stratford is growing so far as juildings are concerned, but is she growing in a commercial sense? Un- employment in Stratford is probably just as high in proportion to popula- tion, as it is in larger centres. Per- haps some of the initiated could give us a reason for this. Even unemployment would not be felt so much by the unfortunate ones if the problem of the working man was taken more seriously inte con- sideration. by those. in authority. Building houses under a permit as to material, size and construction is one cause of increased wages and the high cost of living. Every workman is worthy of his hire and every man must have wages according to his liv- ing expenses. If those expenses are high, then the wages must be higher in proportion to save the workingman from destitution or charity. If one is inclined to be thrifty and wishes to live within his income, and de- sires to live in a small cheap house with that end in view, he is unable to do so because the city will not is- sue permits to build such houses. This is an injustice to the workingman and a stumbling block in the way of pro- gress and contentment. Something should be done to remedy this condi- tion and offset the tendency towards snobbery. * * * Speaking of snobbery reminds me that the Prince of Wales and Premier Baldwin are two gentlemen of high order, not a partical of snobbery is in the make-up of either of them. The Prince of Wales especially is doing a good turn for general society by act- ing aS a true democrat. If he prefers a straw hat to any other kind of high- er order of tile, -he is quite right in acting as if it was nobody's business but his own. I am glad he is a young man of independent thought, being able to set the pace for some of the high and mighty ones who believe so much in conformity. Premier Bald- | win also is a safe man to fill such a high position that has been thrust upon him.
