The horses had. balked at the added pull. The driver urged them, but they wouldn't start. Finally, he stood up and laid his whip first on one side and then | on the other. As each horse felt the sting of the lash they jumped forward, but there was no concerted action. As each blow fell the driver became more excited and the horses more ob- streperous, Another driver pulled up beside the stranded team. "Hold on," he said, as he jumped from his seat. _ He walked in front of the horses, patted first one, then the other. He talked to both gently and in a minute had them quieted down. Then he said to the irascible driver, "Put up your whip and sit down and hold your lines steady." Then he took a bit in each hand an pulled the two horses toward him, talking to them as he slowly moved backward. The horses dug eight hoofs into the dirt, their withers stiffened, and gradually the wheels began to move and the load was out of trouble. "Get up," said the first driver, and his wagon moved along. Then second driver mount to his seat and whistled as he proceeded. Mayor Marshall is the government inspector and the warehouse is being operated by Albert Schade at the old Empire Brewery on Erie street. A good as- sortment of brands will be kept in stock and citizens will now have no further trouble in getting their sum- mer drinks. The Perth Brewery will soon have its famous old brands on the market, within a week or ten | days at the most and it should be popular as it was years ago since this brewery brews on the old English system, turning out very fine brands | of ale and stout. * * * On Sunday the Canadian Legion B. | E.S.L. held its annual decoration ser- | vice in memory of the veterans who laid down their lives in the Great War. A brief service was held at the Memorial and at the cemetery. The speaker of the day was Capt. the Rev. G. P. Duncan, who himself served in | the war and who has sons sleeping in France. The service in order not to conflict with the public service of thanksgiving was briefer than usual but it marked the day and kept alive the memory of the departed. . * * * Once again apprentices from the local C.N.R. Shops have been success- and to the city. They have again at- tained high honors, leading the ap- prentices of the entire system in the | yearly examination results. The boys from the big shops have always stood well and on several occasions have headed the list, getting higher stand- ing than any other apprentices on the System. John Bain and William Pringle are the honor men in last year's list but the other boys stand well for the average for the whole shop was over 90 per cent., a stand- ing which is quite remarkable, ' beg * * There is considerable speculation about how many men Stratford will get from Ottawa when the C.N.R. shops there are closed. There are about 100° families involved and Stratford and Montreal are to get } them. Naturally it is hoped that this city will secure a goodly number of that 100 but no definite word has "ome as yet. * * x - Last week a' correspondent of The Mirror sent in a letter expressing the opinion that it was not fair for the P.U.C. to charge meter rent for gas meters\and then charge for the service. This is a point that the Com- mission has discussed several times and as qa matter of fact the members of the Commission would like to abol- ish this meter rent, so far as we can learn, but just at the present time the commission is desirous of seeing how the latest reduction in rates is going' to work out before lopping off any more revenue. for the plant is not paying at the present time and can only pay if there is a big increase in'the number j of customers. That is only. fair Therefore to cut the present revenue any further until it is seen how things are going to work out would be bad business. At Wed- nesday night's meeting the commis- sion learned that 40 new customers had been secured. This is a gratify- ing increase and augurs well for the future. The commission is to be com- mended for the efforts being made to put this public utility. on a paying basis and it is to be hoped that its | efforts will be successful. * * * The issuing of drivers' permits un- der the new automobile law started this week here, but there is no very great rush for permits as it is under- | stood that there will be plenty of time allowed for motorists t oget these per- | Bhere is apparently to be a | strict checking up on those persons | mits, not in possession of their full physi- cal faculties and any deformed or crippled person will have to take an examination before getting their per- mit. The difference between a winner and a loser lies in the degree of interest each takes in the task at hand and in the spirit or attitude with which the job is tackled. Life is all a matter of what we are and what we are doing here. The world owes no man a liv- ing who is not willing to collect it in payment for services rendered.
