THE MIRRO i gt Nees The Art of Singing Singing is the musical expression of the voice. It is part of our natural condition to possess organs for the pro- duction of sound, and perceptions to make them musical, and being thus equipped, It is but natural that the art of music should be intimately asso- ciated with human life. Singing, as ordinarily understood, may be described as the sound of the human voice when tuned to the musi- cal scale, and it is usually associated with speech. Yet in a higher sense, we must regard singing as the art of combining tune and speech in such a way that the notes are started in full- ness and purity exactly on the pitch intended; the words are prolonged, yet sound as natural as the most erpress- ive talking, and every tone conveys the emotion desired by the singer. To this end two factors are necessary, first, the breath must be under perfect control; second, the vocal organs must be trained to act. with unconscious ease. Some students, on trying to sing for the first time, have felt them- selves contracting the throat uncom- fortably, and the more in proportion to their endeavors to add force to their efforts,or asthey ascend to the high- er notes of the musical scale. While singing with the throat rigidly held, the tongue is stiffened so that tone and pronounciation are impeded, the jaw, lips, and eyes are riidly fixed, and the face assumes an unnatural ex- pression. Under these conditions it is impossible to start any note exact- ly on the pitch intended, or to execute a scale except in a jerky or blurred manner. When we sing with the throat loose and unconstrained, the breath rushes out and causes disaster by compelling us to take in a fresh supply before the end of a phrase, and the more naturally we sing, the greater is the necessity of learning how to control the breath. It thus be- comes apparent that the art of sing- ing has within it a great deal that is quite outside the province of music. For although the musical expression of the voice is Of prime importance the whole foundations of the instruments involved belong strictly to the prov- ince of physiology, like any of the other natural functions of the body, and by far the greater share belongs to the study of the speech organs. The management of the breath is a big subject, and will be treated later in this column. Interested students of music in any of its varied forms will be glad to learn that this column will be conduct- ed weekly by the Federation of Music Teachers of Stratford, who will be glad to answer any questions relating to music by addressing them to the Editor of the "Mirror." By Mr. Charles H. Walker, organist and choirmaster of St. John's United Church, and secretary of the Federa- tion of Music Teachers of the City of Stratford and vicinity.
