The most | unfortunate one as mentioned in last week's | issue that of Nigel E. Easun. Nigel gave every indication of being one of the best motor cycle riders in the country. He was cool and collected and had won many events in. Western Ontario. Then there is the Howard " Howie" Morenz of hockey fame has cast his lot with the professionals and will play next season for Leo Dundurand with the Montreal Canadians. This is surely the season for picnics and there are few organizations in the city but have gathered at some place or another for their annual day's sport. The majority; including Sunday school and Home and School Club picnics have been held in the Queen's park, and where could a more beautiful spot be found. Its verdant trees, well kept grounds, splendid cooking, ae- comodation and convenience to the water front make it one of the most suitable places in this section of the province. Out | of town organizations have been attracted by its beauty and have come here to spend. the day. That business organizations are realizing more and more the value of giving atten- tion to the social welfare of their employees was marked in a striking manner only on | Wednesday of this week, when no less than seven stores closed for theentire day so that no business worries of the morning should. inar the enjoyment at the picnic grounds. The staff of Agnew's shoe store joined with the staffs of the company's other stores and spent the day at Wabassa park, near Hanilton. The Public Utilities Com- mission employees spent the day in Bayfield as did also the city jewellers and their fam- ilies. Duncan Ferguson Company's de- partment store held theirannual picnic in Monteith's grove... In addition to these, the Normal School Literary Societies and the Stratford Chair company chartered special trains and were conveyed to Port Stanley where they spént an enjoyable day beside the waters of Lake Hrie. Outings of this nature promote a_ better Spirit between employer and employe. 'The streets an@ parks are a revelation to him."' Nothing would please him better than to again be a resident. He is with the Ford Motors in Detroit. Consider the case of a certain friend of ours whose mother named him Edwin but. who, for some unknown reason was later called Eddie. We learn from this experience never to stop at the curb to fix our flivers in the dim hours which precede the dawn. After eight hours spent in replacing fuses, diagnosing trouble and being polite Eddie was on his way home to his well-earned repose when, out on Erié Street, something seemed to be preying on the vitals of his steed. Realizing that a stitch in time saves nine --a brilliant and original statement fully protected by -copyright--and that the trouble, if ignored, amight become aggravated and permanently. undermine the constitution of his fliver, he pulled up under a street lamp to investigate. He spent some time peering and poking at the "innards" of the machine and finally fig- ured that she ought to beall right now. But to make sure he drove around the block and returning stopped at the-same spot to clean up the-loose ends. He had finished and was cranking the motor when a voice came out of the gloom. S 'Stick 'em up !"' Eddie was too much of gentleman toargue | in a case like this, particularly as he noted that the request was accompanied by the ap- parition of an extrémely efficient looking piece of heavy ordinance in the hand of a large man. _ _"'Now you come along with me.'" This, also did not appear unreasonable in _ the situation. He did ashe was told. While ~ the short procession was proceeding along ~~ Erie street Eddie saw his chief. side-kick Barney dashing up the street on his way. home after a tiring evening. spent in the dis- chatge of pressing social Obligations. He called to him-a couple of times and Barney finally hearing, trailed along with the par- ade, At the station it was brought out that the gentleman with the artillery was a plain clothes man who had_ been watching Eddie for some time and had concluded that fixing a motor was a stall to cover up some nefar- ious design and had accordingly walked him in. as a suspicious character. But Barney's ingenuous countenance and patent air of re- spectability were sufficient to retrieve the suspect from the mouth of a yawning cell. . All of which teaches us that if we must fix our flivers at a time when honest folk should be abed we should be careful to have a friend handy in time to rescue us from the nervous hands of the law.
