SATURDAY, OCTOBER 7, aL ONTARIO TODAY Shrubs planted to provide winter color. . PLANTING TIME AGAIN BY A. W. RUNDLE OST plants have now completed their season's growth and many have taken on their beautiful fall colours before taking their winter nap. Vegetables and fruit will have to be taken in soon and stored for winter use. This is planting time for many varieties of deciduous trees and shrubs. These plants can be moved bare root if the roots are not exposed to sun and wind. Most Spring blooming bulbs should be planted this month. Crocus, hyacinth, and daffodils should be planted early. Tulips can be planted in some areas late in the month or even early November, When planting these bulbs in the Fall, why not try some of the newer and more interest- ing classes and varieties? Remember bulbs require rich soil and good drainage. Late plantings could be covered with a mulch for Winter. "Gladiolus and tuberous begonia bulbs, Dahlia and Canna tubers will have to be taken in before heavy frost. Begonia, Canna and Dahlia should be stored in a cool room in vermiculate, peatmoss, or - with sawdust to prevent loss of moisture. Gladiolus should be dusted with DDT and kept in a dry condition. To keep your lawn in good condition, do not allow the grass to get more than 3" high and do not cut lower than 1%" Now is a good time to level that uneven lawn, the high spots should have the sod lifted and sorhe sil removed, while the low spots could be filled in with top soil. A light top dressing of fine top soil could be spread over all your lawn to improve: the small depressions and also protect grass roots. Leaves left on the lawn are of no value, in fact are in most cases injurious to your 'lawn. All leaves and green refuse trom flowers and vegetable gardens could be used in a compost pile to make plant food for the following year.
