SATURDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1961 COUNTRY OF THE UNEXPECTED N India so much is unexpected the visitor soon forms a tendency to take the unex-, pected for granted. So when you visit the city of Udaipur in: the famous Indian state of Rajasthan, you are hardly surprised to find that it stands on the shore of a four-square- mile lake created artificially at the end of the 14th century! What does surprise -- and enchant you -- however, is the almost incredible beauty of the lake and its setting. Surrounded by green hills, with the picturesque city of Udaipur stretched along one shore, Lake Pichola is dotted with two small islands, each of which is entirely covered by a marble palace that seems to have come straight from the pages of an oriental fairy tale. Not as perfect in setting but most im- pressive in its splendour is the palace of the Maharana in Udaipur itself. Resembling Wind- sor Castle in size and outline, with massive octagonal towers crowned with cupolas, this great palace -- or rather series of palaces -- ONTARIO TODAY more than half a mile long, is built on the crest of a high ridge, which soars straight up from the lakefront, in some places several hundred feet. NTRANCE to the palace is made through a double gateway, between which are eight carved arches, under which in the past, various Maharanas were weighed and an equivalent weight, in gold and silver, distributed to the poor. The second gateway opens into an im- mense courtyard, from which entrance can be had to the palace apartments with their beauti- ful peacock mosaics, paintings, inlaid mirror work and floor tiles. By all means you must visit the roof gardens, which give a magnificent and unforgettable panoramic view of the city, the steelblue lake and the surrounding hills. Udaipur has many other places of interest such as its huge Jagdish temple.
