NE day' last month a Toronto newspaper, unleashed on an unsuspecting public the faces. of nine men whose common bond is wrestling. Yep, wrestling. The nine of them were spread right across the page and the explanatory line across the top said: "Representative Faces of North American Wrestling Promoters Convening in Toronto This Weekend." The boys were identified and their home towns were listed (they were there from Montreal in the north to Mexico City in the south, from Los Angeles in the west to: Charlotte, N.B., in the east) but nowhere else in the paper was there a single line to explain why the pro-- moters were convening. Well, why were they? What fiendish new devices were these captains of culture planning to unveil? Was it a frontal assault on the new national television net- work, CTV, or by some barely credible mischance were they planning to go back to the old, or honest, form of skill and science? HERE is probably no -- ah -- sport in the world that has undergone the ups and downs of wrestling. Once upon a time there was Completely Honest Wrest- ling at which the practitioners grew so accomplished that for hours on end nobody moved. Nobody in the ring, that is. In the aisles people began racing toward the exits. In the ring during the era of Completely Honest Wrestling, This Guy would get That Guy in a death grip, slowly forcing the air right out of him, and that Guy would just lie there either waiting for death or for This Guy to tire so that he could then get a death grip of his own, and the first thing you knew it was tomorrow morning. : So Completely Honest Wrestling had to go. In its place came Modern Wrestling, and Modern Wrest- ling was an immediate sensation. This Guy and That Guy were replaced by the Villain and the Hero, and CONTINUED ON PAGE 16
