'PREFER TEA BAGS Swe ow THE OSHAWA TIMES, Saturday, October 7, 1961 Shop Days Friday Or Saturday {By THE CANADIAN PRESS | Most Canadian families buy! their groceries on Friday and Saturday, and the supermarkets ®el the lion's share of the 'business. This is one indication of buy- ing habits uncovered in the Canadian Consumer Survey of #1961, a study conducted in 74 "tities from St. John's, Nfld., to Victoria and published by the Lanadian Daily Newspaper Pub-| dishers Association. . CDNPA sent out thousands of | questionnaires. After processing 36,000 replies and making 10,- 000,000. tabulations, the research. | ers came up with facts on the) buying habits of Canadians and their brand preferences. ~. Replies indicated that 75 per cent of Canadian households buy roceries in supermarkets. Only 0 per cent go to independent | grocers. | Forty per cent load up the! market baskets on Fridays| ~while 23 per cent buy on Satur- days. Only one per cent let! their shopping go until Monday. For instance, 91 per cent of house- Jodls buy molasses in the At- lantic Provinces where bread) "dnd molasses still is a treat. Only 33 per cent of Ontario 'households buy it. * Quebec, which produces much| of the country's maple syrup, | 'apparently also leads in its con-| sumption with 54 per cent of | households buying it. The na-| In British Columbia only 18 Wer cent of households buy rain oats, the lowest in Canada. In| the Atlanitc Provinces, the figure is 31 per cent. | Canadians show a distinct spreference for tea bags or balls. Only 30 per cent reported pur-| Chases of packaged tea but 85 Per cent bought it in bags or alls. The percentages add to! more than 100 because some households bought both varie-| ties. «A mere six per cent bought | dnstant tea but 76 per cent purchased instant coffee. | Somewhat more liberal liquor] Jaws and availability of beer in| ocery stores apparently had ttle affect on sale of soft drinks in Quebec. In purchases of pop, that province was right at the Sop. But the fried-potato wagons | so familiar in Quebec may have 4 depressing effect on sales of potato chips. BEANS POPULAR While the survey showed up many regional differences, it #igo showed that there is mo variation in Canadian tastes for some items. Canned baked beans, catsup and peanut but ter are universally linked and purchases in all regions are! close to the national averages. The survey, which covers buying habits and brand prefer- ences over a wide range of consumer products, including foods, drugs, cosmetics, wearing apparel, household appliances and automotive products, is re- garded as a source of valuable merchandising data for adver tising and sales executives.
