SE TR Le Rh A RR Whenever a fluid silhouette, sparkling colors and fine fabric create a harmonious symphony -- Fashion becomes all things exciting. This is such a fashion season! Fashions have a wondrous mo- bility -- flares, bias cuts, go- dets and pleats -- all give a wonderful movement to dresses, suits and coats. With gently - balanced bodices eased into overblouses, tunic lines and blousons, the top news in fashion is complemen- tary to skirt shapings. Will o' the wisp waistlines go up and down ...inorout... defining the middle with ac- cents of draping and detail, or just hinting at it without any accent marks at all. There are alsc belting, seam- ing, dropped torsos or elongat- ed lines to flare out or pleat be- low the waist. The wandering waistline is further enhanced by trumpet flounces, panel flares, box, side and cluster pleats -- as well as by bell and cone shaped de- In this pleated and flared flurry of fashion skirt lengths vary in intermediate Jengths from top-of-the-calf to higher. There's news too, in shorter sleeves and in no sleeves (quite an innovation for winter days| ahead). Necklines are high -- and are defined by bracelet and wedding ring collars . . . cowls, jewel and cardigan neck- lines. These will prove to he dramatic backdrops for excit- ing jewelry dress-ups. The silhouette takes on excit- ing flourishes in cape-like shap- ing for coats -- in body-consci- ous but relaxed lines for dresses -- in semi- or demi-fitted slim suits. Coat shapes are most divers- ified of all. There are volumin- ous, back-swept great coats and slender columns that just clutch; soft, subtle variations of| princess lines that barely touch the waist then graciously flare to the hem; others are happy blendings of the modified slim look. Fashion's wonderfully fluid look is further interpreted in a thrilling variety of handsome fabrics -- in every category Wonderful Fluidity Noted In New Season's Fashions new miracle fibres blended with natural ones. The look of bulk in coats for example -- is one illusion. . . created by airy-fabrics without weight. And, the season's rich, lush fabrics often take none or little trimming. Many new silhou- ettes show their only trim "at the hemline -- in fringe, bor- ders, flounces, feathers and furs. You'll find reference to "'noth- ing" dresses and "nothing" colors applied to some of the specific fashions within the new season collections. These are dresses that have been stripped of all excess de- tailing -- have little or no sleeves, a simple jewel neck- line and the barest waistline definition. These are the dresses that become "really something" when punctuated with the proper accessories. And as for the "nothing" col- ors -- these are the smoky, mossy, bronze-toned, blackened and sooty hues that demand colorful accents of fashion-wide addenda . . . in jewelry and accessories. Without any uproar, head- lines or revolutionary changes, fall fashions step out in the spot- light with a discreet elegance . . . a figure consciousness and subtle flattery for all American women -- whatever size they may wear -- whatever fashion needs they may have. OPULENT LOOK Spectacular jewels in magnifi- cent size, blazing brilliance and variety of hue pay tribute to the season's luxurious but re- laxed look. Pins, necklaces and earrings are more varied than ever, and demand attention instead of be- ing subtle. Stones and beads in gorgeous gem colors are mixed in hue and shape for impressive richness. RARE CREATURE The Tasmanian devil, found only in the Australian island state, is a bear-like creature with large jaws, weighing less from sheer woolens to new, than 20 pounds. Fall Fabrics' Fine Texture There's a tremendous todo about texture in fall's fabric showings. Woolens have smooth- er surfaces; hand-loomed effects create a third-dimensional look to many of the light and airy knits and worsteds. To complement the fluid look of the new silhouettes -- fabrics are especially supple; crepes, chiffons and feather-weight wools help express the subtle mobility of new lines and new ooks. Prints -- expressed in new matte jersies, challis and sheer- weight woolens often look sculp- tured and help to define the demi-fit of many dresses and costumes of new season collec- tions. For evening -- luxurious bro- cades, ribbed fabrics, silks and satins -- glow with lustrous beauty in body-conscious figur- ing to shape up the variety of luxurious looking gowns and frocks for after-dark. New "West Point" (short, stand-up collar) are also sure fashion pacers. Shirts (for bowling and other popular winter sports) with rib- bed underarm inserts spell ac- tion and comfort. Shirts feature block patterns, geometrics, sub- dued stripes, classic checks and tattersalls in a colorful array. Men's belts move in new fash- ion directions this fall. Whether they're destined for town or country -- they travel in hand- some circles. There's more to the belt this fall, in fact, they're wider; with one inch and a quarter widths coming up strong. All add extra dimension and shape to men's fall wardrobes. Variations on belt themes: buckles that step-out bold in size or restrained -- full leather belts or just strips of leather with stretch hemp trims or fabrics vw THE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesday, October 4, 1961 13 In fall's fashion vocabulary-- the word is *body-conscious ness" -- but an easy translatior defines the relaxed mood of dresses as: the shape's the thing. High waistlines or low ones, they are gently defined with a most easy-going look. The high waistline may be just under the bosom and defined by cum- merbund or draped detailing, darted and seamed for shape -- or -- they may wander down to the hipline in overblouse styling, tunics, and A-line band- ing. Flares swing into prominence in all dress collections -- knife pleats, circular seamed flares, suggested width at the hemline or with flounces. Low placed godets also help the flare look. Necklines are as variable as the fall weather; with jewel, cowl, boat and bateau styles in the lead. Others are cardigan types, or have novel bracelet and wedding ring collars; stand- up or standaway. Fashion sounds a call to bare arms in a daring show of new sleeveless and tiny - sleeved styles. Newer to-the-elbow length sleeves also are well {mannered invitations to the smart long gloves of the sea son, extending warm welcomes to handsome bracelets. Fabrics are enchanting and exciting in variety. Heading the list of star performers are knits. Knits of every kind are shown: feather light, spongy or tex: tured. There are knits and double knits and all are des- tined to play leading roles in every woman's new season wardrobe. Many of the smart fall dresses are handsomely topped with hipbone or waistline jack- ets; some demi-fitted and others in deliciously » relaxed Chanel types.
