McINTYRE HOOD Special London, England, Correspondent to To The Times LONDON Scotland's new team, de- signed for world cup play 1 |proved its worth by its well deserved 3-2 victory over Czechoslovakia at Glasgow's Hampden Park in a qualifying game for the world cup series. There was some surprise when the attacking Tottenham half- 4 |back, Dave Mackay, was drop- ' |ped from the side in favor of Pat Crerand, Celtic's defensive wing half, but the change proved justified by the result, and by the sterling play of ; |Crerand in keeping the speedy Czech wingers in check. Denis Law, released by his Turin Club in Italy for the game, was the match winner, but the architect of victory was the elusive Tottenham inside forward, John White. He engin- cered the plays that brought the three goals, laying one on for Ian St. John, now of Liver- pool, and the other two scored by Law. KEPT TOGETHER The Scots showed all-round superiority over the Czech team, and proved worthy win- ners. Scotland and Czechoslo- vakia can now be tied at the top of their group in the world cup. The Czechs have two games to play against Eire, and if they win both they will have to meet Scotland in a playoff on a neutral ground. If Eire should draw even one of the two games, then Scotland will be through to the final world cup series to be played in Chile next year. Meanwhile, the Scottish selec- ters and team manager Ian Me- Coll are keeping this team to- gether. The same 11 have been chosen to meet Ireland in a home international at Belfast on October 7. It is just possi- ble, however, that Turin may not release Law for this game, as Turin are due to meet their great rivals, Juventus, less than 24 hours after the Belfast game, and may not be willing to allow Law to play for Scot- land. GREAVES IN TROUBLE Jimmy Greaves, former Chel sea goal-snatcher, now playing his football in Italy, is again in trouble with his new club, Milan. He has been fined $850 and suspended from receiving any bonuses, for what the club manager terms *"indiscipline" He charges that Greaves left the hotel in which the team was staying and did not return all night, and that he failed to turn up for training sessions, claim. 'ing he was busy helping his wife in their new Milan flat. Milan are now having second thoughts about their wisdom in buying Greaves from Chelsea for $285,000. Signor Rocco Pas- salacqua admitted to corre- spondents that Greaves is just not the kind of field general the club wants, and that it would have been much better if Milan could have got Johnny Haynes of Fulham. Although he is a problem boy, Greaves has Scotland's New Look May Be Right Answer to transfer Greaves to some other club and replace him with the kind of forward tl want, with the name of Phil Woosnam of West Ham mentioned as a possible replacement. Totten- ham has been mentioned as be- ing interested in Greaves, but Milan would probably want much more for him than any Eagtish club would be willing to pay especially in view of his highly temperamental perform- ance in his relations with Milan.
