The Vikings outclassed Toronto Wanderers II by the score of 12 to 3 in the season's opener in the Ontario Inter- mediate Eastern Rugger Con- ference. From the beginning whistle, Vikings gained control of the game. Early in the first Joy ings scrambled on a rolling ball in the Wanderers' end zone, to give Oshawa a try for, three points. Don Taylor nar- rowly missed on a wind-blown convert attempt. Nearing the end of the first half the Vikings hard-running backfielder, Jim Hinkson, dash ed over the goal line form 15 yards out to give the Oshawans another three-point try, which also remained unconverted. This brought the half time score to 6 to 0. The second half started with the Toronto Wanderers forcing the Vikings deep into their own territory. Dave Goldman, play- ing as a substitute for the Wanderers, took advantage of an Oshawa penalty and kicked a three point field goal from 25 yards. This seemed to revitalize the Vikings and Hinkson again gal- loped over for another three- point try, after receiving a well-executed pass from Wayne Voege at the Toronto 15-yard line. The convert attempt again fell short. With less than five minutes playing standoff half for the Vikings, grabbed a short later- al pass from Don Taylor and ran 65 yards for the best run of hte day and the final score of the game. Don Taylor's convert attempt was again blown wide by the wind. On Saturday, the Oshawa Vikings host the To- ronto Welsh Athletic Club, for an -xtibition match at Lakeview ark. Next scheduled league action for the Vikings is Saturday, Sept. 30 against the Toronto Old Boys. Training sessions are still be. ing held at Lakeview Park every Tuesday and Thursday evening. , Lace, Voege and Shepherd; Backs -- Taylor, Williams, Nielsen, Boyd and Hinkson.
