School Needs Filled By Centre Merchants An Oshawa mother was overheard saying, "They may not admit it but they'll be glad to get back to school." Perhaps this is merely wishful thinking, but like it or not, 'they' will be back to school in a matter of days, on Sept. 5. Oshawa Shopping Centre merchants are doing their part in assisting school children prepare for the big day. All the latest in fall fashions from tots to teen-agers are now available at the Centre. REDUCED PRICES Business administrator Claude Keon said that in most cases, merchandise is selling at reduced prices. Stock offering special savings has been selected and merchants are passing these values on to the purchas- ing public. Mr. Keon said that all possible window space has been given over for display of back-to-school clothing. Prime displays in shoe stores are footwear for the younger set. TRENDS SET Already trends in shoe styles for the various age groups have been set. Smart two-strap Oxfords and tie shoes are recommended for the juniors, while jet heels are the vogue for the junior miss. One shoe store manager remarked that the jet heels are popular in the senior public school age group as well as in the high schools. Books and other school supplies are now available. Although text-books will not be taxed, pens, paper and ink are affected as of Sept. 1." These items are being displayed and merchants are continually reminding the people that now is the time to buy. PRE-TAX SHOPPER For the benefit of the pre-tax shopper, complete lines of fall and winter merchandise are available. Winter coats are selling, as they will certainly be taxed 8 percent. Mr. Keon said that by making these late lines available, shoppers will have the opportunity to avoid the tax. Besides window displays which show the latest fashions at the greatest savings, catalogues have been circulated for the benefit of the bargain shopper. Special values are clearly advertised. "Everything required in the way of school sup- plies, clothing and footwear is now available at the Centre," said Mr. Keon. ONE-STOP FOR ...
