James William Fowler of Fairport Beach pleaded not guil- ber anything after the first drink In his own defence, Fowler said that he had no idea of the youth's age and that he had only met him a couple of times. Magistrate Dnieper ruled that it was obvious that the youth was under 21 years of age and registered a conviction. ty to a charge of supplying liquor to a minor. Sgt. Peter Hollywood of the Pickering Township Police De- partment told His Worship that on July 24 at 10.10 p.m. he was called to the boy's home at Fair- port Beach, at the request of the mother. The officer said that upon en- tering the house he found the youth unconscious on a couch and that he was obviously in- toxicated. He said that later he went to the residence of the ac- cused where Fowler was duly charged. When called to the stand the youth said that he visited Fowler's house on the day in question and that he was given a glass of wine. Taylor, 42, who admitted being wanted by police in Eng- land and "all over Europe," was sentenced Monday to one year in jail on false pretence charges. Testimony showed that in 14 days after arriving in Canada from Germany, he had cashed cheques totalling $232 by using two charge accounts from downtown department stores as identification. He also wrote a $3,000 cheque for a car on a Johannesburg, South Africa, bank, but it wasn't cleared and he didn't get the car. Using the name of Samuel Charles Taylor, he obtained a Canadian birth certificate and ran up a $95.47 bill at a Buffalo hotel while promoting a non-ex- istant company, the court was told. Language Help By Magistrate PICKERING (Staff) -- Magis- trate Robert Dnieper proved that there were advantages to studying Russian in college when he came to the aid of an accused Ukrainian woman by giving her a 30-second course on Canadian legal procedure in her own language in court here Mon- day. His Worship learned that Mrs, Gienia Lukow, of 3610 Dufferin St. Toronto, had elected to ans- wer a drinking charge in' place of her husband, Sidney Lukow, although she had been erron- eously charged. Mrs. Lukow explained that at the time of the offence, having liquor in a pub- lic place, the investigating offi- cer had taken her name and address instead of her hus- band's. She requested to take her husband's place because of the extra expense in making another trip to court from their Toronto home. Magistrate Dnieper so con- sented and found Mrs. Lukow guilty of having liquor in a place other than her home and fined her $15 and costs, The offence occurred in a Pickering Township park on Aug. 13, and was investigated by Const. Robert Speakman of the Pickering township: police Careless PICKERING (Staff) -- In Pickering police court on Mon- day a Pickering township youth was fined $50 and costs or 15 days when Magistrate Robert Borden Dnieper found him guilty of careless driving.
