2 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Saturdey, August 26, 196) GOOD EVENING By JACK GERRIN OSHAWA BANDS FAIL AT CNE ; There was mumbling and grumbling this week fol~ lowing the performance of three Oshawa bands in CNE competition. All finished last in their class. The Band of the Ontario Regiment trailed the Wes- ton Silver Band by 20 peints in Section 1 of the All- Brass Bands. The Oshawa Junior Band finished fourth in the All- Brass Section 3, : The OCVI Band finished fourth in Section § Brass and Reeds Segtion. All of these bands are personally directed by Band- master Francis J. Francis, who came to Oshawa from overseas in 1958, The poor shewing of the Band of the Ontario Regi- ment is especially puzzling because it is generally ac- cepted as being ene of the best in its class in Ontario-- not only is it a band rich in tradition and high perfor- mance (it won four consecutive CNE titles prior to the Second Werld War), but as recently as two years ago it was a band of high promise with four consecutive CNE class victories, two of them under the leadership of Lieu- tenant Francis. The plight of the OCVI Band is equally disturbing-- this student group is scheduled to make an overseas tour next Summer if finances can be arranged; yet it finished up Thursdays behind such organizations as the Barrie Collegiate Band, the Collingwoed CDIC and the . | National Council On Amateur Sport TORONTO (CP) -- A national advisory council on fitness, re- creation and amateur sport was announced today by Prime Min- ister Diefenbaker. The federal government will propose a $5; 000,000 annual contribution in grants fer parliamentary ap-| sistance in personnel and coach training, research, information, leadership training and coach- ing courses, assistance to parti- cipation in national spert and in international competition and in other ways. Success internationally in sport today had tremendous ef- fect on national prestige. Mr. Diefenbaker said a num- ber of federal departments have taken an active part in promet- ing physical fitness and recrea- tian but "there is a lack of ath- letic and recreational facilities in the country as a whole." Mr, Diefenbaker said Cana- dians think with pride of hockey as a great game, one which other countries have adopted. He said he wanted to pay tri- Swansea blitz." Six officers and 44 men, an advance party of the 84th Pan- ter Battalion, arrived at the nearby British training centre of Castlemartin ta prepare the way for 350 additional members of their unit. As they passed through the gates of the camp. demonstrat ors held up anti-German ban- ners, while two local girls set up counter-cheers in favor of the Germans. The West German troops are to have three weeks of NATO training next month at the Brit ish army's tank and training camp at Castlemartin, The un- it's 40 U.8.-made tanks are due in Pembroke Tuesday by ship. Ranieri Mazillia, president of Brazil's chamber of depu- ties, was given the reins of government in Brazil follaw- ing the resignation today ef President Janie Quadros. Ma- zillia was a member of for- mer President Juseeline Ku- bitschek's Social Democratic Party. (AP Wirephote) The visit so far has aroused little interest in this vacation spot. NORDAIR TO SERVICE OSHAWA Department of Transport officials in Ottawa let it be known this week that Nordair Ltd, definitely has the intention of servicing Oshawa and-that they are reor- ganizing their flight schedule in order to do this, This should put a stop to pessimistic rumors that Oshawa would be by-passed despite the fact that the Air Transport Board recommended its inclusion in the Nor- garet Osler Matthews, mother of the late W.
