Rangers Sign Guelph"s Rod Gilbert NEW YORK (CP) -- Right- winger Rod Gilbert of Guelph Merguries has signed to play with New York Rangers of the National Hockey League, gen- eral manager Muzz Patrick an- nounced Tuesday. Gilbert, 21, who lives in Mont- real, was voted the most valu- able player of the OHA Junior A league last season. He led the junior league in scoring with a total of 103 points -- including 54 goals--in 47 games. Gilbert weighs 175 pounds and stands five feet, 10 inches. Late last season he suffered a back injury, cracking a bone at the base of his spine, and underwent a bonegrating operation. It was termed a success. Gilbert had a one-game tryout with the Rangers last year and picked up one assist. Guelph is a New York farm club.
