12 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesday, July 5, 1961 New Hospital Ship Latest Aid Concept Last September a U.S. hospital ship outfitted at pri- vate expense sailed from San Francisco for Southeast Asia. The aim: To treat the sick and, through the treat- ment, instruct Asians in the miracles of modern medi- cine. In this article, a Pu- litzer-prize winning reporter tells how the bold venture in missionary medicine is working out. By RELMAN MORIN ABOARD USS HOPE (AP)- thoroughfare of Saigon today is a shining white ship. Its princi- pal cargo is an idea, a new and dramatic concept in U.S. for- eign aid. She is a hospital ship, the USS Hope. Below decks, you see these scenes-- In one ward, a little Vietnam- ese boy anxiously watches the two nurses, Florence Mudge of Escondido, Calif., and Ruth Cur- rie of Boston, Mass. He can't see them very well. His eyes are crossed. When he comes out of surgery this afternoon they will be straightened. In the surgical theatre, Dr. Craig Leman of Corvallis, Ore., is removing a duodenal ulcer He discusses techniques with the assisting Vietnamese sur- geon as the work proceeds. In the woman's ward, nurse Dorothy Burchett of St. Louis, Mo., asks a question. "What is the Vietnamese word for 'pain,' how do vou say, 'Does it hurt?!" The ship's staff has learned that Asians seldom dis- close pain, not recognizing na- tfure's danger signal. The Hope is primarily ing and training institution, a floating medical school. Its main objective is to instruct Asian doctors, nurses, and midwives. Brave New Indian Chief RED ROCK, Ont.
