Mayor Invites Two Spacemen fcelebrate its link with Stavan- Canadian company in Toronto for a year, and had been sent over to England to attend this special school with a view to further progress in the com- pany. The following countries were each represented by one student: Antingua, British Gui- ana, France, Ghana, India, Ken- ya, Malaya, Nigeria, Pakistan, South Africa, Southern Rhode- sia. Their courses varied in length from two to 12 weeks, but I met one student from Ceylon whose training was to be extended to a year's course. All of these students were go- ing back to their own country to work in the development of farm mechanization there, and to act as instructors or direc- tors in schools to be establish- ed in their own lands. It was exciting to note their keenness and intelligence as they went at their tasks. MANY MORE NEEDED In discussions during the visit to Coventry, it was brought home time and again that, great as this effort by Massey-Fergu- son was, it only touched the fringe of the problem of provid- ing skilled technicians for un- der - developed Comm Ith countries. From Nigeria, Cey- lon, the West Indies and Rhode- sia, came a plea for more stu- dents to be taken in, and for schools to be set up in these countries. Typical of these pleas was that made by A. F. MacKenzie, of Port of Spain, Trinidad, agri- cultural adviser for the West Indies. He told in graphic terms how much the training of skilled technicians in farm mechaniza- tion could mean to the agricul- ture of the islands of that new federation. The answer from the Massey- Harris officials was that if a need were demonstrated, and there was co-operation from government agencies, they would do everything possible to meet that need. The students at the Stone- Technical Training Week, spon- sored by Prince Philip, Massey- Ferguson (United Kingdom), Ltd., subsidiary of the well- known Canadian company of that name, has been demon- strating the part which it plays in spreading technical knowl- edge of farm mechanization throughout the world, This Ca- nadian-born company is provid- ing technical training for the young men of many Common- wealth and other countries The operations of the com- pany demand that its distribu- tors all over the world have trained and skilled people to service its equipment. Of its British production of tractors, over 70 per cent go to 2xport markets in 115 countries of the world. Of all the farm equip- ment which is exported from the United Kingdom, one - third comes from factories of Massey- Ferguson at Coventry. Man- chester. Kilmarnock and Peter- borough. In the Coventry plant which I visited. and where 1 saw the whole modern assem- bly line production of farm and industrial tractors. there are 3,500 plant workers. TRAINING SCHOOL The section of the factory which attracted much interest was the apprentice training school, where young men are given five years training to fit them for posts as engineers and technicians, and other top-rank- ing administrative positions. At present there are 47 appren- tices going through the school, where they are given a thor- ough grounding in all the manu- facturing processes of Massey- Ferguson equipment and trac- tors. It is both a technically scientific and a practical course, and the only limit to the ultimate position an appren- tice can occupy is his own skill, application and ambition. The Massey-Ferguson school of farm mechanization is lo- cated on over 300 acres of land at Stoneleigh, five miles from ger, as well as its 1 car- nival to raise money for local hospitals. Norwegian children will also be on holiday in the town as part of an exchange scheme. TO LAY B.C. CABLE LONDON -- A British cargo ship which has been at sea only a few weeks is to be converted into a cable-layer. She is the 7,665-ton Photinia, which sailed on her maiden voyage in April. The ship will be used to lay 53 miles of pipeline needed to carry supplies of natural gas from the mainland of British Columbia to Vancouver Island. TENANT FOR CASTLE INVERARY, Scotland -- The Duke of Argyll has found a ten- ant for Iverary Castle, his 300- year-old Scottish home. She is Madame Montgomery de Bra- bant, a rich American widow with "a passion for Scottish castles." She is paying about $530 a week for the castle, com- plete with staff, 20,000 acres of deer stalking, six miles of sal- mon fishing, and a piper who plays at 8.30 each morning.
